Flights to Santa Fe or Albuquerque

You can book a flight to Santa Fe Airport (SAF) or to Albuquerque Airport (ABQ). ABQ is usually less expensive but not always.

If you are traveling far, you may want to arrive on Saturday. You can stay at an inexpensive hotel near the airport and catch a shuttle to Santa Fe on Sunday morning. If you are traveling from sea level, a night at 5,500 feet can be helpful for adjusting to high altitude before coming to Santa Fe which is at 7,000 feet.

Sandia Shuttle (ABQ to Santa Fe locations)
Roadrunner Shuttle (SAF to Santa Fe hotels)

Sunday, June 10th

If you are riding the Sandia Shuttle from the Albuquerque airport ask the driver to drop you off at the 599 RailRunner Station. We will run a free shuttle service from 11 am to 5 pm from this stop to IAIA. If your shuttle arrives outside these times, you will need to order a LYFT or an UBER from this stop to get to IAIA. It would be wise to share a ride with other CSSS students on your Sandia Shuttle.

There is no longer a regular taxi service in Santa Fe. There is New Mexico Black Car Service but it is a bit more upscale and can be pricey. You can get a quote using their site.

New Option - a student just told me that they were able to use this service without a smartphone. ReddAp They have a phone number to order a cab, so no smartphone app is required.

Mail will be delivered to the CSSS Office at IAIA each weekday. The office is located behind the Commons (the room we will be meeting in for lectures).

There are no telephones provided on campus. Plan to bring your cell phone.

The Santa Fe Institute is located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Because of the terrain, cell phone coverage may be spotty, inconsistent, or unavailable. IAIA is located in a more open area of Santa Fe and generally has good cell phone coverage.

All students staying on campus will have free access to IAIA's Performance Arts & Fitness Center using your IAIA ID/meal card. We plan to have the fitness center available each weekday from 7:00 - 8:30 AM and from 4:00 - 6:00 PM. Weekend hours will be posted soon.

The dorm rooms have WiFi. We are checking on the availability of Ethernet jacks. VOIP services such as Skype may encounter connection issues.

There is WiFi access across the IAIA campus. Internet access at the SFI main campus will be limited to guest access on local machines.

You must bring with you any power converters or plug adapters to plug your computer into the 120V outlets in the United States. We do not supply foreign power converters.

Additional Important Information

SFI Friday Campus Visits:
Fridays will be held exclusively at the Santa Fe Institute Cowan Campus, which is approximately 16 miles from IAIA. Shuttles will load at 8:00 a.m. and depart at 8:15 p.m. from the parking circle at IAIA.

Don't be late. It takes at least 40 minutes to travel from IAIA to SFI. The day at SFI will last until approximately 4:45 p.m. Shuttles will then depart from SFI at 5:00 p.m. to return to IAIA unless notified otherwise.

General Contact Info for Santa Fe Institute

Please note that SFI is closed on weekends

Car Rental: Car rental is available both in Santa Fe at your own cost. We have corporate rates with Enterprise - for more information, please contact SFI program staff. Since our arrangement with Enterprise doesn't cover insurance, we recommend that you accept supplemental coverage at the desk if your credit card or personal insurance policy does not cover rental car insurance. You must be 25 or older to rent a car.

Taxi: There is no taxi service in Santa Fe. For car-for-hire, use Uber or Lyft.

Local bus service: Santa Fe has a small public transportation system, Santa Fe Trails. For route and schedule information, see

It is very important that you have health insurance coverage while attending the summer school. International participants are especially advised to make sure they have adequate coverage before entering the United States.

We expect that all participants will comply with the following requirements: 1) attend all lectures for the full duration of the program; 2) participate fully in the intellectual development and write-up of a group project and fulfill all related assignments and deadlines; 3) complete all surveys administered by SFI related to the CSSS, including pre-program survey, all faculty evaluations, and a post-program survey. Participants who do not meet these requirements may be asked to leave the program at the discretion of the director.
