World Order and Stability

Does diversity increase stability in international affairs? The term "new world order" has been used to refer to a new period of history evidencing a dramatic change in world political thought and the balance of power. Which world order is more stable: a multi-polar (pre-WWI), bi-polar (Cold War) or uni-polar (post-9/11) world order? The question has spawned considerable discussion in the field of political science and international relations theory. Some of the most prominent scholars have weighed in on the question over the decades and the debate continues to take center stage in current discussions on peace and security. This project will draw on foodweb dynamics to model the relative stability of various world orders.
