Ells is pursuing a PhD at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State (Salathé Group). His research interests focus on the public health impacts of health behaviors that spread from person-to-person.

Ells is also interested in leveraging interactive media for citizen science and general scientific outreach. To accompany his home institution's Coursera MOOC on Epidemics, he developed Vax, an interactive game about epidemic prevention. http://vax.herokuapp.com

Ells is a PhD Candidate at the Center for Infectious Disease Dynamics at Penn State (Salathé Group). In August, he'll begin work as an ORISE Fellow at the CDC in Atlanta, GA.

Research Interests

  • evolution of antibiotic resistance and optimal antibiotic-use strategies [1]
  • public health impacts of health behaviors that spread from person-to-person (social contagion) [2]
    • optimal vaccination strategies when susceptibility is clustered on a network
    • infectious disease management by improved ventilation when vaccination is not feasible
