Complex Systems Summer School 2011 |
A first idea
Hi! An idea for a T-shirt, just to start the creative process flowing, I guess.
What I noticed about former years (very cool) T-shirst, was that they were all focusing on one common theme. They had a network, or this chaos-picture in it. So they were focussed on representing Santa Fe or a complex System in some way - and off course this is what binds us all together.
My idea is, that maybe it would be cool if we would take a slightly different approach: instead of emphasizing what we all have in common, emphasizing how diverse our backgrounds are (and still we find each other in this complex system theme).
One way of doing that, is that we would use a network of logo's which would represent us.
Everyone would have at least one logo he/she can link to, but preferably more. For instance, we can have a logo representing geography, or maps, or people, or (difficult one) policy, or transport. So it could be either about the field, the method, or the application. We could even act leisure activities like hiking, or sports, or... the possibilities are endless.
Then, everyone would chose however many logo's he/she feels linked to. Based on the number of links, this logo would get a more prominent place on the T-shirt (e.g. bigger picture), and the network in between would give the connections between the specialties - we could even change the pointsize of the line to correspond to the number of people having this link - e.g. between 'geography' and 'graph theory'.
The T-shirt would then represent all the things we together cover and study with complex systems. I think it could be pretty cool!
To succes, it would need some help from all/most of you, in coming up with the logo's but most importantly linking yourself to the chosen set of logo's (that would be approx 2 min, but still).
So, think about it, and if you have any other ideas, post them below!

What does theory mean to you? #tweet
CSSS-ers,
Recently, we had a great conversation that illustrated how theory means very different things across disciplines. We want to capture these different meanings of theory in an artistic t-shirt design.
We need your help! We have created a very brief Survey Monkey survey. Please take a just a minute to describe what theory means to you, limiting your description to a tweet-length 140 characters.

Since we want to make sure we don't miss anyone, we will hunt down and survey in person those who don't use the online survey. :)
Thanks so much for your help!

Another (probably obvious) idea
I thought it would be neat to take the social network some of us are working on of the group and make it into a pretty graphic, perhaps allowing each person to pick an icon or color to represent themselves. This could go on the T-Shirt, perhaps around or within another design or border.

Word maps & networks
We came up with a couple ideas. A word map based on Clio's keyword survey and a network based on geography (the countries where students are from and have studied or worked). Here is one version of a word map and a demo network with 10 people we sampled. The network has the people as unnamed nodes and places as named. The keywords show the breadth of study and the geography shows the international flavor of CSSS while highlighting that we are all connected through SFI. Geography could also be entered as a word map as SFI would still be by far the largest word. We could also combine keywords and geography in a word map. Lastly, one of these ideas could be used on the back of a shirt in concert with another design on the front.... And lastly lastly, the specific formats can definitely be modified. -Anna, Eugenia, and Michael J
