Chandigarh Attractions

1. Sukhna Lake
Location: Sector 1, Chandigarh
Description: Sukhna Lake is a beautiful lake and lies at the foothills of the Shivalik Hills. This 3km2 man-made lake is rain-fed and was created in 1958. It is a peaceful spot with a scenic waterfront. A number of water sporting activities like boating, water skiing, yachting are carried out here. Picnics during the morning and evening are common and it is a meeting spot for locals who want to relax after a long day.

2. Nek Chand's Rock Garden
Location: Sector 1, Chandigarh (Near Sukhna Lake)
Description: Nek Chand's Rock Garden of Chandigarh is one of the most architecturally lauded spots in India. It is completely built of industrial and home waste and thrown-away items.. It was single-handedly created by Nek Chand, in secret, in 1957. The Rock Garden is built into a 12-acre (49,000m2) complex of interlinked courtyards, each filled with hundreds of pottery-covered concrete sculptures of dancers, musicians, and animals.

3. Zakir Hussain Rose Garden
Location: Sector 16, Chandigarh
Description: The Rose garden is a botanical garden spread over 30 acres of land with 50,000 rose bushes of 1600 different species. The garden has the distinction of being Asia's largest. The garden has not only roses, but also trees of medicinal value. Some of the medicinal plants that can be spotted here are bel, bahera, harar, camphor and yellow gulmohar. Food stalls are present and entry is free but unlike other places picnics are not allowed.

5. The Government Museum and Art Gallery
Location: Sector 10-C, Chandigarh (Near the Rose Garden)
Description: The Government Museum and Art Gallery is composed of the following sections – The National History Museum, The Museum of Potraits, The Chandigarh Architecture Museum and The Art Gallery. The museum/art gallery exhibits 10,000 mostly Indian artwork such as sculptures and paintings. The attached Reference library houses approximately 10,000 media. Chandigarh Attractions

6. Choki Dhani
Location: Amravati Enclave, Pinjore Kalka Urban Complex, Shimla-Kalka Highway, NH-22, Panchkula, Haryana 133302, India
Description: Chokhi Dhani is a concept capturing the vibrant spirit of Rajasthan and ensuring a perfect Rajasthani experience. It is a place where visitors get a snek-peek into the culture and practices of Rajasthani tribes. The real Rajasthan, the villages, the paintings, Bani Thani art, the wall decorations, the fresh air, the evening performances, the enthusiasm, the 'manuhar' (a delicate request to eat till your heart’s desire), the traditions, the costumes and at last but not least the feelings – that is what you will experience at Choki Dhani. Their thali (a meal made up of a selcetion of various dishes) consists of authentic, traditional Rajasthani food.

7. Tagore Theater
Location: Sector 18, Chandigarh
Description: Tagore Theatre is a center for cultural performances. It used to be an important hub for cultural activities in Chandigarh and has now been convereted to an auditorium. Plays, dances, puppet shows etc. Are regularly performed in Tagore theater. Keep an out on their website for the latest event happening here!

8. Gurudwaras in Chandigarh
Description: A Gurudwara is the place of worship for Sikhs; however, people of all faiths are welcomed in a Gurdwara. The gurdwara has a Darbar Sahib where the Guru Granth Sahib is seen and a Langar where anybody can eat free food served by the Sikh community. A gurdwara may also have a library, nursery, and classroom.

9. Mata Mansa Devi Temple
Location: Located at a distance of about 10km from the Chandigarh bus terminus and 4km from the Panchkula bus terminus, the Mansa Devi temple can be reached by local buses or autorickshaws.
Description: Mata Mansa Devi is a Hindu temple dedicated to goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti. It is one of the prominent Shakti temples of North India. Thousands of devotees visit the shrine from various parts of the country The temple remains open from 4-00 A.M. to 10-00 P.M. in the summer and from 5-00 A.M. to 9-00 P.M. in the winter.

10. Archaeological Museum, Ropar
Location: The Archaeological Museum is situated about 40 kms north east of Chandigarh on the Rupnagar – Chandigarh highway on the bank of sutlej river.
Description: The museum houses the archaeological remains of an excavated Harappa site near Ropar, the first Harappan site excavated in Independent India. The excavation revealed a cultural sequence from Harappan to medieval times. Important exhibits include antiquities of Harappan times, Painted Grey ware culture, Saka, Kushana, Gupta times such as Vina Vadini (lady playing on vina), steatite seal, copper and bronze implements, ring stone, yakshi image, gold coins of Chandragupta. It is open on all days, except Fridays, from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

11. Chhatbir Zoo
Location: 17 kilometres from Chandigarh on the Chandigarh-Zirakpur-Patiala Road
Description: Chhatbir Zoo is a zoological park located that houses hundreds of different mammals, birds and reptiles. One of the major attractions of Chatbir Zoo is the lion safari.The Royal Bengal tiger is the pride of Chattbir zoo. Visitors are taken on the adventurous trips to the Asiatic Lion reserves, where animals roam about freely. You can also find many different species of birds.
