On-site check-in for the Summer School will be from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8 in Peterson Student Center at St. John's College. If you are riding the Sandia Shuttle from the Albuquerque airport ask the driver to drop you off at the parking circle at the Peterson Student Center, St. John's College. If you are unable to arrive during the check-in period or reception, you need to check in and get your room key from the Switchboard in Peterson Student Center, on the first floor to the left of the main entrance.

If you are driving your personal vehicle to the summer school, you must register your car with St. John's College. We will have vehicle registration cards available at check-in. Please park in the campus visitors lot at all times.

5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. WELCOME RECEPTION & DINNER
A welcoming reception and buffet dinner will take place from 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on the second floor of the Peterson Student Center.

Late Arrivals
If you arrive later than 6:00 p.m., please check in at the switchboard, located on the first floor of Peterson Student Center
Very late arrivals (11:00 p.m. and later) must use the telephone in the coffee shop to call the switchboard (dial 0) in order to gain access to the building


HOUSING/MEALS:
CSSS participants will be assigned single dormitory rooms at St. John's College. Clean sheets and towels are provided weekly, as well as a pillow and two blankets (see Conference Services General Information for more information). We suggest that you bring a clock and anything else you might need for your personal comfort.

The housing at St. John's College is based upon single occupancy. For safety and contractual reasons you may NOT have overnight guests in the dormitories. We can recommend local hotels or other accommodations for your guests. St. John's College does not allow smoking inside any of the buildings.

If you are locked out of your room, please contact the switchboard by dialing 0 from any phone. They will send someone to let you in.

Three meals a day are served in the cafeteria, located in Peterson Student Center, Monday through Saturday. Two meals are served on Sunday. All meals are included in your room and board; you will be issued an electronic swipe card that you must present upon entry to the dining hall. There is also a coffee shop located in Peterson where you can purchase a light meal or snack. The nearest restaurants are about three miles away.

TELEPHONES:
Each dorm room has a telephone with its own number that will be assigned to you at registration. Please be sure to give that number to anyone who might call you. In an emergency, calls can also be put through to the St. John's switchboard: (505) 984-6000. You can purchase long-distance calling cards in the campus bookstore. There are also pay phones on campus.


CELL PHONES:
Both St. John's College and the Santa Fe Institute are located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Because of the terrain, cell phone coverage may be spotty, inconsistent, or unavailable.


ATHLETIC FACILITIES
All students staying on campus will have free access to St. John's Student Activity Center, using your St. John's College ID/meal card. For more information please see their website at http://conferenceservices.sjcsf.edu/cnfserv16.htm. Santa Fe is also known for wonderful hiking trails and an active outdoor culture.


COMPUTER FACILITIES:
The CSSS will have a small computer lab available for use by the students and faculty. We will provide a network printer, a Linux server with the usual unix software and Matlab, Swarm, Repast, StarLogo and NetLogo, as well as compilers for C, C++, and Fortran. There will be 3 iMacs with the usual Office productivity software and Adobe products, usable for either windows or Mac users. Wireless access is available in the coffee shop of Peterson Student Center and the Evans Science Lab building, where the physics lab is located. Due to the limited computational resources, participants are encouraged to bring their laptops, which can be configured to be part of the summer school network. If you anticipate any special computing needs, please contact SFI's computing department (computing@santafe.edu).

There is limited wifi access in the Peterson Student Center where lectures will take place. Internet access at the SFI main campus will be limited to guest access on local machines.

The dorm rooms have both Ethernet and phone jacks. VOIP services such as Skype do not work well at St. John’s College due to limited bandwidth. Long distance phone cards are available for purchase at the bookstore.

IMPORTANT: You must bring any Ethernet cards, 10/100 BaseT Ethernet cables, adapters, etc. to connect your laptop to the local network in the dorms. We do not supply networking cables for use in the dorm rooms. You must bring with you any power converters or plug adapters to plug your computer into the 120V outlets in the United States. We do not supply foreign power converters. If your University back home requires the use of "Side Car" or other forms of security authentication software, you may not be able to log into your computer at home from the summer school. The St. John's College network is behind a NAT firewall, preventing some of these programs from working. As a result, if you have data back home you want to use at the summer school, the safest thing is to bring it on a CD or on your laptop computer.

INTERNET SECURITY ISSUES:

St. John's College has a NAT firewall installed, which limits the use of BitTorrent, and other peer to peer networking programs.


PHYSICS LAB

There is a physics lab set up to demonstrate nonlinear dynamics in the Evans Science Building. Open access to this lab will be granted after the initial demonstrations.

LOCAL TRANSPORTATION:

SFI Campus Visits:
Wednesdays will be held exclusively at the Santa Fe Institute Cowan Capus, which is approximately three miles from St. John's. Shuttles will depart at 8:30 a.m. from the parking circle in front of Johnston Student Center. Lectures at SFI will last until approximately 4:45 p.m. Shuttles will then depart from SFI at 5:00 p.m. to return to St. John's unless notified otherwise.

Please note that SFI is closed on weekends


Car Rental: Car rental is available both in Albuquerque and Santa Fe at your own cost. We have good corporate rates with Enterprise; for more information, please contact SFI program staff. Since our arrangement with Enterprise doesn't cover insurance, we recommend that you accept supplemental coverage at the desk if your credit card or personal insurance policy does not cover rental car insurance. You must be 21 to rent a car and you can rent a car just for a weekend in Santa Fe by calling Enterprise at 505-989-8859.

Taxi: The number for Capital City Cab, the taxi service in Santa Fe, is (505) 438-0000.

Local bus service: Santa Fe has a small public transportation system, Santa Fe Trails. For route and schedule information, see http://santafetrails.santafenm.gov/. Route "M" has a stop at St. John's College and provides service to downtown Santa Fe and to nearby museums seven days a week. The Santa Fe Institute is not served by the bus system.

HEALTH INSURANCE:
It is very important that you have health insurance coverage while attending the summer school. International participants are especially advised to make sure they have adequate coverage before entering the United States.


PROGRAM EXPECTATIONS:
We expect that all participants will comply with the following requirements: 1) attend all lectures for the full duration of the program; 2) participate fully in the intellectual development and write-up of a group project and fulfill all related assignments and deadlines; 3) complete all surveys administered by SFI related to the CSSS, including pre-program survey, all faculty evaluations, and a post-program survey. Participants who do not meet these requirements may be asked to leave the program at the discretion of the director.


PROGRAM FORMAT:
The school consists mainly of lectures and small group meetings/project work. One day per week, lectures will be held at the Santa Fe Institute campus.

The schedule on the wiki is updated as information becomes available. Most of the lectures will be scheduled in the mornings or early afternoons. Student projects are a major part of the school. Most projects are comprised of small teams of two to four people. Projects in the past have consisted of computer simulations, mathematical models, literature reviews, or combination of the above. The range of topics in the past has been broad.

Students will form working groups based on general topic interest. In these working groups students will form teams for doing projects, determine topics, and write short (one-page) project proposals. During the remainder of the school the teams will carry out the projects. The final two days of the school are set aside for project presentations. One or more members of each team will give a 15-minute presentation on the results of the project. Each team will also submit a final write-up on the project. After the school is over, all papers will be posted in PDF format on the SFI website.

You do not need to come prepared with a project or project proposal. These will be formulated during the first week.

Prior to the beginning of the school, you are strongly encouraged to review the following areas in mathematics, if you feel it is necessary. You will find discussions of these areas in any standard college-level calculus, linear algebra, or probability and statistics textbook.

Calculus: basic techniques for differentiation and integration, basic techniques for solving ordinary differential equations, partial differentiation, basic techniques for solving partial differential equations, basic techniques for solving series.

Linear algebra: solving linear systems of equations, vector spaces, matrix theory, eigenvectors and eigenvalues.

Probability and statistics: sample spaces, elements of probability calculations, binomial coefficients and elements of combinatorics, random variables (distributions, variance, and standard deviation).

Background readings related to lectures are added to the wiki under “Readings” as they become available.

8:30 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. CHECK-OUT
All dorm rooms must be vacated by 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 2. Please return your key to CSSS staff at the table on the first floor of Petersen. If you depart before 8:30 A.M. on Saturday, please make prior arrangements with CSSS staff and leave your key at the Switchboard. Lost keys or keys not turned in by 10:00 A.M. incur a $25 fee.


SANTA FE:
Santa Fe is located in northern New Mexico at an elevation of 7,000 feet (2,130 meters) in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With a population of over 65,000 people, it is well known for its art, culture, dining, and year-round outdoor activities. June/July weather is usually hot and sunny during the day (90F/32C) and cool in the evening (55F/13C). There are often thundershowers in the afternoon. Dress is casual. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat with you. Hiking boots are also recommended.
