This talk will report a surprising coupling that emerged between the topology of the protein network and the evolution of genome structure (gene number, amount of non-coding DNA, dynamics of gene order) in an individual-based model of genome evolution called aevol. The evolutionary process and its side-effect, the indirect selection of the best trade-off between robustness and evolvability, genererated this unexpected interaction between different organization levels. Thus a systemic approach of living systems should take into account not only the interactions between gene products, but also, in an evolutionary perspective, the long-term interactions between different organizations levels.
