The issue of scale is central to research on the structure and function of ecological networks such as food webs. I will briefly discuss three aspects of this issue: (1) Whether and how sepcies richness (S, number of nodes) scales with number of feeding interactions (L, number of directed links among species); (2) Whether there is universal scaling in food web network properties such as degree distribution and minimum spanning trees; and (3) What recent simple models and complex data tell us about scaling and generality of food-web structure.
