10:30 Discussion I: Comparing Agriculture in Humans and Insects

  • What is our definition of "agriculture"?
  • From that definition, can we say that both humans and insects practice "agriculture"?
  • If humans and insects are not both practicing "agriculture", then how do they differ and can they be usefully compared? (If our answer is "No", then the remaining discussion topics will necessarily change. And we may not be able to satisfactorally answer these questions until the afternoon session.)

12:00 LUNCH

1:30pm Discussion II: Agricultural Practices in Humans and Insects

  • What are the similarities and differences in human and insect agricultural practices?
    • Substrate preparation and maintenance
    • Weed and pest control
    • Preventing / encouraging evolutionary changes in domesticates
    • Propagation, harvest, storage, and processing of domesticates
    • Organization of production / consumption

3:00 TEA

3:30 Discussion III: Diversity of Agriculture in Humans and Insects

  • What are the similarities and differences in the range or diversity of agricultural practices?
    • Species of domesticates
    • Uses of domesticates
    • Manipulation of domesticates and incorporation of new domesticates
