Complex Systems Summer School 2015

Sharon got her start studying biomedical engineering as an undergrad at Northwestern Unviersity, where she learned to think of the human body as a complex system. There she had a chance to work on exciting projects like designing waterskis for amputees and treadmills for the blind. After a two year post-graduate fellowship in a bioinformatics lab at the National Cancer Institute, she joined the Dept of Genome Sciences at the University of Washington as a PhD student. There, her complex system of choice was the intricate web of interactions between the trillions of microbial cells that inhabit the human body. She developed novel computational analyses to look at these interactions on a broad scale and identify patterns that relate to human health. She has recently graduated and is keeping her ear to the ground for her next adventure!
