The 2008 Annual Science Board Symposium entitled "Sustainability and the Urban Experience" will be held Friday, April 11 at the La Fonda Hotel (100 East San Francisco Street) in Santa Fe, NM.

Abstract: As the engines of economic growth, cities have been the hub of new technology innovation, transformation of political and organizational forms and generators of commerce and capital formation. Cities are also the genesis of disease, poverty and pollution. In a rapidly urbanizing world understanding these linkages and modes of interaction is critical. This meeting surveys the connectivity between and across cities, from an ancient perspective to a view on the future evolution of city structure globally. We then explore the mechanisms by which greater economic productivity and innovation, characteristic of cities, arises and discuss the implications for alleviating extreme poverty and promoting a new model of a sustainable city.
