Mapping changes in science over time
Science is a highly dynamic, organized, and parallel human endeavor to find patterns in nature. In science, new ideas are built upon old ideas and through cumulative cycles of modeling and experimenting scientific research undergoes constant change: fields grow and shrink, merge and split. Citation patterns among scientific journals allow us to glimpse this flow of ideas and how the flow of ideas changes over time. In my talk I will present how we use information theory to uncover these changes in the myriad citations.
