Dear REUs:
Welcome to the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program at the Santa Fe Institute! We are looking forward to your arrival. Please plan to arrive at SFUAD between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on June 5, 2016 and to depart on August 13, 2016. TRAVEL TO SANTA FE:
You will receive a travel grant up to the amount of $800 for the purchase of an economy-class round-trip airline ticket to attend the workshop.
Please choose your flights and send the details to Juniper Lovato who will purchase your airline ticket and shuttle for you. Or you can purchase your own ticket and we will reimburse you upon receiving your original receipts after your arrival to the program.
Airport: The closest airport to Santa Fe is the Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ), approximately 90 minutes from Santa Fe by shuttle.
If you are bringing a car: You will need to register your car at check-in. We hope that if you bring a car you can also assist in carpooling other REU participants which SFI will provide mileage reimbursements for.
CHECK-IN:
On-site check-in for the REU program will be in St. Michael’s Hall at the Santa Fe University of Art and Design (SFUAD), from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on June 5. If you are unable to arrive during these times please let us know for further instructions. Your welcome packet will contain your room assignment, dormitory keys, and meal cards.
Welcome Reception and Dinner: June 5 5:30 - 8:30 p.m.
A welcome reception and dinner will be held for the REUs from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at a local restaurant.
HOUSING/MEALS:
Housing: You will be housed in a double-occupancy room in one of the dormitories at SFUAD. We suggest that you bring linens, a clock, and anything else you might need for your personal comfort.
For safety and contractual reasons, you may NOT have overnight guests in the dormitories. SFUAD does not allow smoking inside any of the buildings. Pets are not allowed.
Meals: Meal tickets for breakfast and dinner are included in your SFUAD room and board. On the weekends, you will be own your own for lunch.

Gym: the Driscoll Fitness Center will be open for all summer occupants
Laundry: Laundry machines are available in each dorm wing and it is free
COMPUTER FACILITIES AND INTERNET:
If you do not have a laptop, no worries, we will have laptops and desktops available if needed for the summer.
The dorms don’t have Ethernet ports but are equipped with Wireless access points.
The Institute has workstations and an associated Macintosh network. There are virtually no private offices at SFI, but you will be assigned your own workstation and computer. You are welcome to bring your own laptop computer.
Wireless internet is available at SFI and the SFUAD campus.
If you have specific questions or computing needs, contact the SFI computing department (computing@santafe.edu) prior to your arrival.
IMPORTANT:
You must bring with you any power converters or plug adaptors to plug your computer into the 120V outlets in the United States. We do not supply foreign power converters.
LOCAL TRANSPORTATION:
Personal Vehicles: If you bring a car to Santa Fe for the summer, you will have your mileage reimbursed for all REU-related driving. We ask that drivers plan to carpool with other REU students to SFI on a daily basis.
Car Rental: Car rental is available both in Albuquerque and Santa Fe at your own cost. You must be 21 to rent a car. We have good corporate rates with Enterprise. To make a reservation, call (800) 736-8227 or use the web site at http://bit.ly/1EJR3zW Make your reservation from the Albuquerque Airport location (ABQ). Since our arrangement with Enterprise doesn't cover insurance, we recommend that you accept supplemental coverage at the desk if your credit card or personal insurance policy does not cover rental car insurance. It is possible to rent a car just for a weekend in Santa Fe by calling Enterprise at (505) 989-8859.
Taxi: The telephone number for Capital City Cab, the taxi service in Santa Fe, is (505) 438-0000.
Local bus service: Santa Fe has a small public transportation system, Santa Fe Trails. For route and schedule information, see http://santafetrails.santafenm.gov/. There is no bus service to SFI.
HEALTH INSURANCE:
It is very important that you have your own health insurance coverage while attending the summer school.
PROGRAM FORMAT:
In the next few weeks I will send you the schedule for the REU program. We will have lots of exciting lectures and tutorials during the first few weeks but most of your time will be dedicated to doing one-on-one research with your mentor. We like this process to be organic so there is no need to choose a mentor until after you arrive. We will be posting potential projects from the mentors on the wiki and they will likely be sending email to congratulate you on your acceptance and to tell you about their projects. You are also welcome to reach out to faculty before you arrive.
During the first few week of the program, you are encouraged to attend the some lectures of the Complex Systems Summer School. These lectures will be in the Great Hall in the Peterson Student Center at St. John’s College. Please visit the CSSS Wiki for a tentative schedule of lectures. Most of your time will be spent at the Santa Fe Institute (lunch will be provided).
A stipend of $450 earned per week will be provided to you. You will be paid your program stipend in three installments. The first payment will be available during Week 1 of the program, the second during the first week of July, and the third at the conclusion of the program. With proper identification, you can cash your check at the local bank upon which it is drawn.
SANTA FE:
Santa Fe is located in northern New Mexico at an elevation of 7,000 feet in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. With a population of over 65,000 people, it is well known for its art, culture, dining, and year-round outdoor activities. Summer weather is usually warm to hot during the day (up to 90°F) and cool in the evening (around 55°F). There are often rain showers in July in the afternoon. Dress is casual. Be sure to bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat with you. Hiking shoes are also recommended.
