Power-laws, Conflict and Cooperation
Power-law distributions are ubiquitous in biological, physical and social systems. Recent research suggests that the distribution of casualties related to conflict and natural disasters follows a power-law. If casualties follow this type of distribution, do conflict events also follow a power-law distribution? This project will evaluate the distribution of real conflict event data for different conflicts. In addition, we will test for power-law distributions in cooperative events. We will consider the policy implications of the results and outline next steps for future research.
