Although technological innovation has been perhaps the critical factor in creating the high standard of living experienced in the developed world, understanding its causes remains an important challenge. We are organizing an informal, three-day workshop to study the problem of technological innovation from diverse perspectives. The workshop will bring together experts from economics, engineering, sociology, physics, biology, and business, to present, discuss and compare each discipline’s view of technological change. We will attempt to strike a balance between empirical and theoretical work. There will be a particular focus on the application of theories of technological improvement to the transition to a low carbon emissions energy infrastructure. Our goal is to identify tractable research topics and stimulate new collaborations.
