Federico Bert

From Santa Fe Institute Events Wiki

Hi, I am Fderico Bert, from Argentina. I am agronomist and cuarrently I am completing my PhD at the University of Buenos Aires. My research is aimed at understanding and modeling adaptive management in response to interannual and interdecadal climate variability in agroecosystems. This case study combines the complexity, multiplicity of scales, and feedbacks of biophysical interactions in natural ecosystems with the additional intricacies of human decision-making. I am very happy to be able to participate at the CSSS and I see you soon!

1. What topics do you have some expertise in and would you be willing to help others learn them?

I have some expertise in quantitative modeling of complex interactions between biophysical and human components in agroecosystems. I use crop models to simulate the biophysical component and quantitative decision making, adaptation and learning models to simulate the human component.

2. What do you want to learn at the CSSS?

I would like to expand my background and abilities to study and modeling complex systems. I wish to explore approaches and learn about methods and tools to cope with problems in complex systems. In this sense, I am strongly interested in interact with people and incorporate methods from other disciplines and explore ways to combine approaches, methods and tools.

3. Do you have any projects or research interests that would benefit? from an interdisciplinary approach?

I am involved in an interdisciplinary project aimed to exploring opportunities for the effective use of novel information (e.g., climate information) and technologies to enhance outcomes of agroecosystems, and how these technologies diffuse through the network of decisions makers. During the summer school I hope to enhance my background to understand and model complex systems and this obviously will contribute to this project. I hope and wish to interact with people that may contribute to our project and can help with my expertise to other projects.

4. Do you have any ideas for what sort of project you would like to do work on with other CSSS students this summer?

5. Suppose you could travel one-hundred years in the future and ask researchers any three questions. What would those questions be?

How, long term climate variability and change has affected/impacted in: (a) the agricultural systems and (b) world food security? How human activities (particularly related to food production) have impacted in the natural ecosystems? Have been agricultural systems sustainable? Has natural resources been able to cover human food needs?
