Our postponed March 12 meeting on “Assessing the Promise of AI” will now take place as a series of virtual conversations on June 24, 25 and 26 from 10:00 am - 11:00 am US Mountain Time. The series, co-sponsored by ACtioN member Goldman Sachs, will feature presentations and discussions with [www.santafe.edu/people/profile/melanie-mitchell|Melanie Mitchell] on her book [us.macmillan.com/books/9780374715236|Artificial Intelligence: A Guide for Thinking Humans], [www.santafe.edu/people/profile/mike-price|Mike Price] on New AI Techniques for Evaluating Firms and Other Organizations and [www.santafe.edu/people/profile/michael-kearns|Michael Kearns] on his book [global.oup.com/academic/product/the-ethical-algorithm-9780190948207?cc=us&lang=en&|The Ethical Algorithm].

The impact of a technology depends on its efficacy, growth trajectory, and implementation. Much of this nuance is obscured by media hype cycles, which tend to oscillate between presenting new technologies as panaceas or abject failures. This discussion will take stock of the present state of machine learning techniques and explore the likely pitfalls involved in using these tools to assist human decision-making. Specifically, the meeting will use complexity science as a lens to assess the current capabilities of AI, and explore the logical, behavioral, and ethical problems inherent in integrating AI into human systems. The meeting will also explore a few areas of complexity science where development could significantly affect AI in the near future.
