About
My name is Nick Foti and I am a third year PhD student in the Computer Science Department at Dartmouth College. I graduated from Tufts University in 2007 majoring in computer science and math.
What are your main interests?
My work currently is all over the place, however, generally I am interested in applying statistical and machine learning methods to learn things about complex systems. Specific areas of interest for me are economics/finance, text analysis (news, blogs, literature, etc.) and social network analysis.
What sort of expertise can you bring to the group?
I have a good understanding of machine learning and statistics and have become intimately acquainted with Bayesian statistics. My mathematical background is pretty diverse as well and I can more or less find my way through most fields.
I also am an experienced programmer in numerous languages including C/C++, Python, Matlab and R. If people need help with their code, I have experience with other languages and will offer any help I can.
Lastly, I have some experience acquiring and processing large data sets from the Web and other sources.
What do you hope to get out of the CSSS?
I hope to learn new techniques and perspectives in which to approach studying complex systems. I'm also looking to meeting others studying complex systems and discussing the work that's being done and meeting potential collaborators.
Do you have any possible projects in mind for the CSSS?
I don't have specifics, but I'm interested in gathering a large data set of some sort, news stories, blogs, financial data, or something else on the web, and find something interesting about it or develop a new tool to analyze it.
Let me know if you're interested, I'd like some help.
