I am a first year Ph.D. student in the department of Geography at Ohio State University and also hold a MA in Political Science from the same institution. My dissertation research involves using agent-based modelling of social networks to study the sustainability and resilience of political systems under the "double exposures" of globalization and ecological stress. My primary concerns are the ways in which macro-systemic conditions produce risks and rewards that encourage the expansion and consolidation of hierarchical networks that may be less adaptive and flexible to challenges posed by ecological change. Such processes of extension and consolidation of hierarchical networks are relatively common in the social world and include phenomena such as state formation, the development of multi-national corporations, and the construction of bureaucracies.
