Kerstin Damerau joined IIASA’s Risk, Poverty and Vulnerability Program (RPV) as a Research Assistant in October 2009 following an internship with Cemagref Clermont-Ferrand, France. She received her master's degree in theoretical and applied geography in fall 2008 from the University of Vienna, Austria. Being especially interested in renewable energy and climate change mitigation, Kerstin's subjects included global environmental change, meteorology, hazard research, economic geography and political science.

For her PhD within Wageningen University's Earth System Science and Climate Change Group, Netherlands, she is currently investigating the impact of future energy technology choices on regional and global water use, putting special focus on the Middle East and North African region.
