April 16-18, 2009

The history of science in the 19th and 20th century has been one of increasing specialization - systems were deliberately broken down into their component parts for detailed analysis. But as disciplines became narrower and more specific, they also became more isolated from each other and a sense of the whole was lost.
At the Santa Fe Institute, we are rediscovering the connections that have always existed in complex systems, connections that are essential to complete understanding of research themes such as the laws that govern our physical world, economic behavior, evolutionary dynamics and the fundamentals of risk.
