| In response to Dan's questions:
| |
|
| |
| '''1. What are your main interests?'''
| |
| Evolutionary computation, artificial life, optimization
| |
|
| |
| '''2. What sorts of expertise can you bring to the group?'''
| |
| The majority of my research experience is in evolutionary computation, particularly in algorithm development, analysis, and also in practical application domains (a particularly nice way to get my head out of the clouds). I've also done a bit of work with other flavors of population-based optimization algorithms and am pretty good with linear programming. I enjoy modeling, and have experience in the development of agent-based systems for modeling evolutionary dynamics in biotic communities.
| |
|
| |
| My most recent work has focused on evolutionary dynamics on graphs, so this has drawn me into the wonderful world of network analysis. I have a fairly good understanding of this field as well.
| |
|
| |
| '''3. What do you hope to get out of the CSSS?'''
| |
| I hope to meet some wonderful and inspirational people (after looking at the participant and faculty listings, I think this is a given!). I also hope that this experience will open my eyes to other areas of research that I may not know much about. Aside from academics, I'd like to get out a bit and see some of the natural wonders of New Mexico, hopefully accompanied by some of the aforementioned wonderful and inspirational people
| |
|
| |
| '''4. Do you have any possible projects in mind for the CSSS?'''
| |
| Hmmm…maybe. Whether or not I follow my own ideas will depend on how much more interesting other people's project ideas sound!!

My name is Josh Payne and I am currently finishing my 3rd year in a PhD program in the department of Computer Science at the University of Vermont. My research interests are primarily in evolutionary computation and artificial life, but in general I'm interested in just about anything that's worth being interested in.
Outside of academics, I like to snowboard, skateboard, ride my bike, practice yoga, kick soccer balls around, and read good books. Find out a bit more about me:

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you in sunny Santa Fe.
Best,
J
