The volvocine lineage of green algae is rich with a range of single-celled, colonial, and multicellular life. Because divergence within the lineage is quite recent (20-50 mya) and the genomes of both a single-celled and multi-cellular organism have been sequenced. A story of why this lineage may be so prone to the evolution of multicellularity is presented.
