I am a professor at the University of North Carolina. The primary focus of my research is about innovation and invention, specifically location specific determinants of invention rates and their relationship to metrics of local economic performance. Research questions have involved inventor mobility, scaling of invention in cities, regional effects of non-compete laws, and social networks of inventors. I have developed several large scale research databases for the Harvard Business School and the University of North Carolina. I am currently participating in the development of the Networking and Information Technology Research and Development (NITRD) Dashboard for the National Science Foundation. More recent research funded by the National Science Foundation investigated the effect of the recession that began in 2007 and the subsequent impact of the 2009 ARRA stimulus package on industry specific rates of innovation for US metropolitan areas with particular emphasis on sustainable technologies targeted by under the ARRA. I am from Maine, received her B.S. from the University of S. Maine in Economics and a Master’s and Ph.D. from Cornell University.
