We have a reservation for 10 people, 6PM, at Cowgirl - out back in the "kiddie corral". So - the adults get to drink a beer and enjoy a meal in peace, while the kids wear themselves out climbing on the play structure. So far, Brian, Mollie, & Rhonda will be there with kids/ spouses in tow. And if you didn't bring anyone less than 4 feet tall to Santa Fe, you are still welcome to join us - but talk to Mollie so we make sure there are enough seats/ tables!

I've been getting some sniffs of interest in the game! I can probably arrange a bat here and we can play tennis ball cricket (I can also offer a tutorial on cricket ;) - for proper leather ball cricket, folks are welcome to practice with the UNM cricket club at Albuquerque coming saturday around noon! (dont worry, it's fun cricket and not professional quality either!), the club (and I) then travel to Colorado for a couple of matches 16/17 June; so if some are interested in a Colorado trip, let me know. Since the [http://www.elfarolsf.com El Farol Restaurant and Bar] has become immortalized in the complexity literature ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Farol_Bar_problem The El Farol Bar Problem]), we should check it out. BTW, some locals said the El Farol is a tapas bar and not a full restaurant. See below for more places.

the dale ball trails starting from the back of st john's provide 22mi+ of what looks like pretty nice trails for biking (& walking!), plus there are many more excellent trails local [http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?s=2e6c56b6542d2b67e39037cc578ead2e&f=91 and otherwise], and there is also a local bus for $2/day to access some of these. ==Grand Canyon?==
Is anyone else considering visiting the Grand Canyon after CSSS? 
Flagstaff, AZ is about 5 hours away, which is a good place to spend the night with GC a relatively short drive away.
If other people are interested I could drive the long way home to Tucson passing by Flagstaff and spend a couple of days. 
I was there a couple of years ago, but I didn’t have my camera with me then. I would like to fix that stupid mistake.

btw, for those who asked, I checked and for the Grand Canyon the only thing that requires a permit in advance is overnight camping or overnight hiking.

==Hike to Nambé Lake, Saturday, June 9th==
Folks: we will hike to Nambé Lake, which is a less-strenuous hike in the same area as Santa Fe Baldy. The guide book says the lake is a “special treat”, and there are apparently lots of wildflowers. It is a 5-hour trip (including lunch stop), 7 miles return. The plan is to meet at 9.30am in the usual spot (same place from where the shuttle buses take us to SFI).

The first ten confirmed people are: me (Ryan), Simon, Mike, Elise, Monika, John, Dan, James, Hannah, Fred…

Please add yourself to this list if you want to come (apologies if you gave me a verbal commitment and I forgot).

John has kindly offered to drive and we will also be renting one car. If you want to come and aren't on the list above, please figure out your own transport arrangements (I think Michigan Will might be driving too).

Please bring: lunch (we can stop at a store in the morning); water (2 litres); a raincoat; a warm jumper; decent footwear; sun protection.

The general plan is to be on the trail by 6:00 am and return before the end of breakfast. If we don't have transportation, we'll just head up the trail near campus. The GAME IS ON. We're playing down on the fields by the public school on Camino de Cruz Blanca. Turn left out the front entrance of St. John's and left again. The fields will be on your right. It's a short walk from St. John's.

We'll play from 7:00 till dark, unless everyone goes to Rockmore's lecture.

===Bandelier Nat'l Monument/Frijoles Canyon Trail/Los Alamos=== Anyone interested in hiking the frijoles canyon trail to the bandelier nat'l monument? The monument is a group of ancient ruins/caves/etc and supposed to be beautiful (and a quick drive). The Frijoles Canyon Trail is an "easy walk" to the ruins. It's also really close to Los Alamos... the dale ball trails starting from the back of st john's provide 22mi+ of what looks like pretty nice trails for biking (& walking!), plus there are many more excellent trails local [http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?s=2e6c56b6542d2b67e39037cc578ead2e&f=91 and otherwise], and there is also a local bus for $2/day to access some of these. Is anyone else considering visiting the Grand Canyon after CSSS? 
Flagstaff, AZ is about 5 hours away, which is a good place to spend the night with GC a relatively short drive away.
If other people are interested I could drive the long way home to Tucson passing by Flagstaff and spend a couple of days. 
I was there a couple of years ago, but I didn’t have my camera with me then. I would like to fix that stupid mistake.

==Hike to Nambé Lake, Saturday, June 9th==
Folks: we will hike to Nambé Lake, which is a less-strenuous hike in the same area as Santa Fe Baldy. The guide book says the lake is a “special treat”, and there are apparently lots of wildflowers. It is a 5-hour trip (including lunch stop), 7 miles return. The plan is to meet at 9.30am in the usual spot (same place from where the shuttle buses take us to SFI).

The first ten confirmed people are: me (Ryan), Simon, Mike, Elise, Monika, John, Dan, James, Hannah, Fred…

Please add yourself to this list if you want to come (apologies if you gave me a verbal commitment and I forgot).

John has kindly offered to drive and we will also be renting one car. If you want to come and aren't on the list above, please figure out your own transport arrangements (I think Michigan Will might be driving too).

the dale ball trails starting from the back of st john's provide 22mi+ of what looks like pretty nice trails for biking (& walking!), plus there are many more excellent trails local [http://forums.mtbr.com/forumdisplay.php?s=2e6c56b6542d2b67e39037cc578ead2e&f=91 and otherwise], and there is also a local bus for $2/day to access some of these. Flagstaff, AZ is about 5 hours away, which is a good place to spend the night with GC a relatively short drive away.

==Hike to Nambé Lake, Saturday, June 9th==
Folks: we will hike to Nambé Lake, which is a less-strenuous hike in the same area as Santa Fe Baldy. The guide book says the lake is a “special treat”, and there are apparently lots of wildflowers. It is a 5-hour trip (including lunch stop), 7 miles return. The plan is to meet at 9.30am in the usual spot (same place from where the shuttle buses take us to SFI).

The first ten confirmed people are: me (Ryan), Simon, Mike, Elise, Monika, John, Dan, James, Hannah, Fred…

Please add yourself to this list if you want to come (apologies if you gave me a verbal commitment and I forgot).

John has kindly offered to drive and we will also be renting one car. If you want to come and aren't on the list above, please figure out your own transport arrangements (I think Michigan Will might be driving too).

Hi everyone, this is a project related to modeling cardiac tissue with the aim of attempting to understand the conditions under which pathological arrhythmias are evoked. These would include ventricular fibrillation and/or torsades de pointes. Specifically, it would be interesting to look at the the systemic effect of modulating myocyte function by altering specific ion channel parameters, though it would also be interesting to model the effects of myocardial infarction (dead/dying tissue in the heart due to heart attack).

* Absolutely there is a physiologic basis for local interactions. Cardiac myocytes have a structure called the intercalated disk between two adjacent myocytes. This structure is essentially just the abutment of the cell membranes, but it undulates and zigzags so that the effective surface area of the abutment is higher. The intercalated disk contains protein structures which make the cardiomyocytes electrically contiguous with one another (gap junctions). They also contain protein structures which make the cells tightly adherent to one another and to the contractility apparatus within the cells.

The above article is a great review of cardiac histophysiology. There are an average of 11.6 intercalated disks per myocyte, indicating that there are both lateral (or transverse) and longitudinal, or end-to-end, electrical continuities between cells. There is an anisotropy in the observed propagation of action potentials through cardiomyocytes, such that the velocity of propagation is approximately three times faster longitudinally than laterally.

The article also provides a set of testable results to demonstrate the validity of any model that we develop.

Just to clarify, the Rudy group has done some work in multiple cell systems, and has a series of paper describing their results. As I go through some of these references I will post more information to the wiki. I will also post a copy of this email there.

Fundamentally, this project may not end up doing much that is new, although the specific mutation and mechanism of disruption that I worked on for my PhD thesis has not been examined using these modeling techniques. Depending on what we find, the results may or may not be publishable. However, because this is such a classic model system for a networked system that can exhibit chaotic behavior, it is probably a project worth pursuing.

Representing globalization, evolution and adaptation with agent-based modeling and game theory.

==Disclaimer==
I have no experience with sociology or game theory, and I know that everybody is already super busy with deciding which projects they want to be part of. But this seemed like a fun project so there we are, with a new wiki page.

==The project seen as a story==
At the beginning of the world, there were (4 to 6) turtle societies living isolated on different continents. Each of these societies had developed their own game, and each of the citizen-turtles had pretty much the same strategy (or maybe only in one society, there were two strategies). Anyhow, the way it worked was that a turtle would ask another turtle if they wanted to play their game. The gains of the game become money, or fat, or whatever. In any case, when you have many points, you can give birth to a twin turtle.

Each of the (4 to 6) societies had a very different game and very different tactics. For example, one of the societies was composed of thieves that were quite happy to steal from each other, while another society was composed of happy people earning little but sharing it gladly by fair games and strategies.

On a nice day however, bridges appear between the continents and turtles start traveling from one society to the other. As they do, they start playing games with turtles from different backgrounds ...

==Some more rules==
The idea is that each turtle can have at least one game in its possession. It could decide to drop a game and play another one if it finds it better (and keep or change its strategy, that's independent).

When a turtle loses too much, it has no points left and it dies. The turtle world could be with only a set amount of energy (so you'd have to pay to play a game for example) or an unlimited amount, that has to be decided). Also when a turtle is rich enough to create a twin, they could either share equally or unequally the points the initial turtle has. The "twin" turtle can also be slightly different, so that there is a "game evolution" too. Well, there's many rules that can be added.

==Why this is a feasible project==
We've seen today that NetLogo was a cool piece of software with already loads of turtles in it, so that would simplify our work. Also, there's a lot more thinking than coding to do, so it's a project that can be done over lunch/coffee/beer for a large part before we seriously need to invest computer time.

* Absolutely there is a physiologic basis for local interactions. Cardiac myocytes have a structure called the intercalated disk between two adjacent myocytes. This structure is essentially just the abutment of the cell membranes, but it undulates and zigzags so that the effective surface area of the abutment is higher. The intercalated disk contains protein structures which make the cardiomyocytes electrically contiguous with one another (gap junctions). They also contain protein structures which make the cells tightly adherent to one another and to the contractility apparatus within the cells.

There are an average of 11.6 intercalated disks per myocyte, indicating that there are both lateral (or transverse) and longitudinal, or end-to-end, electrical continuities between cells. There is an anisotropy in the observed propagation of action potentials through cardiomyocytes, such that the velocity of propagation is approximately three times faster longitudinally than laterally.

The article also provides a set of testable results to demonstrate the validity of any model that we develop.

Just to clarify, the Rudy group has done some work in multiple cell systems, and has a series of paper describing their results. As I go through some of these references I will post more information to the wiki. I will also post a copy of this email there.

Fundamentally, this project may not end up doing much that is new, although the specific mutation and mechanism of disruption that I worked on for my PhD thesis has not been examined using these modeling techniques. Depending on what we find, the results may or may not be publishable. However, because this is such a classic model system for a networked system that can exhibit chaotic behavior, it is probably a project worth pursuing.

Depending on what we find, the results may or may not be publishable. How do cell phones affect economic growth in countries where communications infrastructure is poor?

A recent paper covered in the Economist suggests that cell phones have reduced waste in fisheries, by giving boats price information before they return to shore. They can choose profitable markets for their catch. The reduction in waste increases the total value of the catch by 5% or more. Better arbitrage and lower information costs result in a sustained productivity gain.

There is lots more to the story here than simple arbitrage opportunities. Communications technology lowers the cost of information for all parties on the network. This should result in lower barriers to entry, lower transaction costs, more innovation, higher productivity, and access to many more customers.
