Hi, we are planning to look for fossils in the surroundings of Mora (about one hour drive from SF) tomorrow. We expect to find trilobites, maybe also ammonoids and other stuff. On the way back we'd like to stop at some hot spring resort.
Departure tomorrow saturday, at about 9:30am from the parking circle. The drivers may have to gather earlier...

If you are interested, please let us know asap so that we can organize the cars.

==Road Trip to Boulder, Colorado==

From Gareth: Hi all, I'm planning on making a trip up to Boulder, CO for the weekend. It's about a 6 1/2 hr drive from Santa Fe and I'll be renting a car. My main reason for the trip is to see a friend of mine so you might have to sort your own accommodation (camping/youth hostel/hotel). We're planning on a bit of hiking nearby. The plan is to leave straight from class on Friday evening and arrive back in Santa Fe on Sunday eve. If you're interested in splitting petrol and rental fee and joining me for some Springsteen singalongs then sign up:

Dancing from 8 on wards.
The cost is $8 including the lesson and dancing (or $3 for the dancing). Venue: Odd Fellows Hall, 1125 Cerrillos Road. We have not yet decided on transportation. We could either take a cab or walk -- Let's try to decide during dinner.

3. Mark - I could use a lesson, or twelve. Do we have transportation?

PS: If you are on the edge because you want to attend the session on "Introduction to Python". I would be happy to walk you through the basics of Python at a later time. -- Vikram

There's a contra on the 23rd; swing dancing most Mondays; this is supposed to be a great tango town, and the drop-in-friendly beginner class on Thursday PM was good ($20, though).

From Gareth: Hi all, I'm planning on making a trip up to Boulder, CO for the weekend. It's about a 6 1/2 hr drive from Santa Fe and I'll be renting a car. My main reason for the trip is to see a friend of mine so you might have to sort your own accommodation (camping/youth hostel/hotel). We're planning on a bit of hiking nearby. The plan is to leave straight from class on Friday evening and arrive back in Santa Fe on Sunday eve. This is a draft I prepared a late evening some time before the CSSS. I didn't know at that time that the dorms have muse names and that I'll end up in the Urania...

Urania was the muse of Astronomy and also the Muse of Mathematics. she was often depicted holding a globe in her hands. In this case the cubist face and hands of Urania are borrowed from Picasso and she holds a SFI globe/dandelion flower head, on which she blows in order to disperse the seeds of complexity.

In my view this would need some serious polishing and volunteers to do so are welcome! Feedbacks also!

Crystals are a prime manifestation of complexity. The design (front and back) represents crystals grown in cell culture dishes as seen under the microscope. The picture on the right has been mapped on a canvas with polar coordinates to show more symmetrical structure and avoid having a beginning and an end. (One from Georg Weber)

Urania blowing seeds of complexity

This is a draft I prepared a late evening some time before the CSSS. I didn't know at that time that the dorms have muse names and that I'll end up in the Urania...

Urania was the muse of Astronomy and also the Muse of Mathematics. she was often depicted holding a globe in her hands. In this case the cubist face and hands of Urania are borrowed from Picasso and she holds a SFI globe/dandelion flower head, on which she blows in order to disperse the seeds of complexity.

In my view this would need some serious polishing and volunteers to do so are welcome! Feedbacks also!

Crystals are a prime manifestation of complexity. The design (front and back) represents crystals grown in cell culture dishes as seen under the microscope. The picture on the right has been mapped on a canvas with polar coordinates to show more symmetrical structure and avoid having a beginning and an end. (One from Georg Weber)

:I am a graduate student in the Biological Sciences program [Behavior, Ecology, Evolution & Systematics (BEES) concentration] at the University of Maryland, College Park, and I am studying macroevolution and paleobiology jointly with the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History Paleobiology Department.

:My background is in cell, molecular, and developmental biology, and before beginning graduate school I worked in the University of Virginia's Center for Cell Signaling studying cell polarity and mammary gland morphogenesis.

==Research Interests==
:I am interested in the macroevolution of development; that is, how the process of development arose and evolved over geologic time. More specifically, I am interested in the developmental regulatory change that occurred during the Ediacaran (635-541 million years ago [Ma]) and Cambrian (541-488 Ma) periods. I will be incorporating developmental biology, genomics/phylogenetics, and fossil studies in my thesis work.

:Animals (Metazoa) all undergo some variation of the process of developing from a small number of collective cells to a larger, more complex form. The patterning and spatio-temporal deployment of the genetic blueprint during development determines morphological phenotype and thus provides both foundation and opportunities for evolutionary change.
:Fossil morphologies of the earliest complex macroscopic organisms – the Ediacara biota – as well as the earliest definitive metazoans of the Cambrian explosion are evidence of successful combinations of developmental traits not present in extant life, and by extension, evidence for developmental evolution beyond what comparative genomics might provide. I am evaluating early fossil morphologies within a developmental context in order to characterize early developmental toolkits. By placing comparisons of these toolkits within a robust phylogenetic and geologic framework, I hope to elucidate macroevolutionary patterns of developmental innovation.

==Complex Systems Connections==
:Developmental gene regulatory networks (dGRNs) possess a unique hierarchical and modular structure. I hope to understand how this network structure evolved and how it subsequently shaped the course of animal evolution. I am looking forward to gaining the skills and forming the connections here at the CSSS to help me wrestle with this topic!

:Also, most recent molecular clock results indicate that metazoan genetic developmental tools evolved long before the appearance of diverse bilaterian animals in the fossil record. Thus, the Cambrian explosion was likely primarily driven by changing ecology, which in turn allowed for the realization of this developmental potential. I would be interested in projects exploring the dynamics of ecological networks, but of course am open to many of the other ideas students have pitched thus far.
