==Present your own research==

there are many others with very inspiring and ready to present research findings, so the idea would be to have a small session next '''Tuesday''' after lectures: let's say 4.30 - 6.00 (or longer, depending on how many of us want to / are ready to present) ...let's say 15 min each (so cut it down to the essentials! ...max 10 slides, if any!) and leave some room for discussion... so if you're ready and want some constructive feedback, just put here the title of your potential presentation, and we'll see if we get a critical mass that's interested:

- Aaron: Characterization of microbial promoter architectures for rational reengineering
==Taos Earthships, Rio Grande Gorge, High Country==
Taos is a small town about 60 miles North of Santa Fe. It's known for the Taos Indian Pueblo, an artist colony, skiing, and the Taos Earthships. Depending on who's interested, we could stop by some wineries on the way up/down. The drive up alone is worth it.
==Tent Rocks this weekend==
We're planning a 2-3 hour hike to Tent Rocks (45 min south of us, toward Albuquerque) sometime this weekend. Would anyone like to go? We will likely have to rent a car.
==Carlsbad Caverns, White Sands, VLA==

Im thinking of taking a trip to the carlsbad caverns, white sands and the VLA this weekend... we can also do some stargazing and perhaps stop at Roswell if people are interested since its on the way....

Its going to be an overnight trip... 2 days... just want to see if people might be interested... i realize its far... but the caverns and white sands come highly recommended for this part of the country...

I am open to doing this on the weekend after the program as well...

I can rent a car...

Heres the route I'm thinking....

http://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=St+John's+College,+Camino+De+Cruz+Blanca,+Santa+Fe,+NM&daddr=3225+National+Parks+Hwy,+Carlsbad,+NM+88220+(Carlsbad+Caverns+National+Park)+to:white+sands+to:NRAO+Very+Large+Array,+Old+Highway+60,+Magdalena,+NM&hl=en&ll=33.94336,-105.710449&spn=4.419525,9.832764&sll=33.897777,-105.67749&sspn=4.421888,9.832764&geocode=FfM6IAIdKumv-SGbTeoLvFZoEQ%3BFR9E6gEdbqLE-SG9sju99z3Ubg%3BFVUG9AEdKLap-SHDIL9nhxjRNg%3BFU7rBwId07qV-SG06Y_KW2f8zg&mra=ls&z=7

==NRAO Very Large Array==

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

Mind signing up to indicate interest?
1.
2. Chris G - Have a car, but all depends on when we go...
3. Cali - I would go, looks cool (can rent a car, don't have one)
4. Raghav - Definitely wanna go... Can rent a car
==Stargazing==

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

- Miles

I'd be interested, might be able to get a telescope, and know a few locations. (JP)
Cristina M.: Count me in and keep me informed. Great idea, Miles!
Shweta S : I am also interested, but I have an early morning flight on 2nd July . So, I have to be at Peterson circle by 4 Am for the Pick up shuttle to airport. If possible, I am certainly in for Star Gazing, haven't done it for years.
I am also very interested... but may fly out on the 1st in the evening... Could we perhaps do this on a weeknight? -Raghav

count on me if it is before July 2... -----Yangjing

==Early morning hiking==

Would anybody would be interested in hiking the Atalaya Mountain Trail (or anywhere else) before dawn to watch the sunrise from the top?

When?

I am kind of tempted to do it on a weekday, but I may end up doing it alone. Unless a few people are interested, we could do it, let's say, this Saturday? The sun rises at about 5h45 these days.

==Swimming?==
Anyone want to go swimming with me (Ed)? There's a pool about 2 miles away that's open till 8:30, was thinking of walking down after class.

Count me in for the drowning. When? - Nini

I'd like to join -Yangjing
I'm in. Where do we meet?--Elliot Aguilar

==Museum Trip Friday June 24th==
It's $8 for admission to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I want to go after lecture next week; sounds like a cool exhibit about the relationship between photography and contemporary art. Let's meet outside the student center at 4:30pm. The museum is open until 7pm. We can potentially grab dinner and drinks downtown afterwards.
I'll drive down in my car from St. Johns; I've got space for 4 more.

1. Nora
2.
5. Yangjing
==Frisbee==
Ok, look. I (Ed) like frisbee. By virtue of being into science, you people must at some level also like frisbee. So, let's play frisbee. There are lots of ways to do this:
1) Throwing
2) Throwing with our arms tucked in like T-Rex's
3) Imbibing beverages and throwing
4) Spinning the disc on our fingers (ooo fancy) and then throwing it
5) Playing cower (ask me for details)

Who has a disc? - Ed

I would be up for throwing, and also for a game of Ultimate. Thursday evening (the 16th) is free on our schedule. We can buy a disc. -Miles

I've got a disc. Just let me know whenever you want it. -AA

I am soo in. Cristina M.

I want to play cower! With beverages! -Kam

==A Nice Dinner Out==

The St. John's cafeteria is great, but Santa Fe is also the home of many unique, world-class restaurants. I would like to go out for a nice dinner some night and would love company. Any of the places below are kind of pricey and will require reservations, so please post preferences for date and location and I'll pull something together. Here are a few to get you started, with reviews and menus. - Cali (weakly prefers La Plazuela or Martín)
Given the talks on Thursday, Friday (if there is time) may be better. Do we need to make a reservation (they recommend so on several places on their website) EH.

I'd be happy for Friday night. There are some fairly large private tubs available. We should look into that. (JP)

{{Complex Systems Summer School 2011}}

== A first idea ==
Hi!
An idea for a T-shirt, just to start the creative process flowing, I guess.

What I noticed about former years (very cool) T-shirst, was that they were all focusing on one common theme. They had a network, or this chaos-picture in it. So they were focussed on representing Santa Fe or a complex System in some way - and off course this is what binds us all together.

My idea is, that maybe it would be cool if we would take a slightly different approach: instead of emphasizing what we all have in common, emphasizing how diverse our backgrounds are (and still we find each other in this complex system theme).

One way of doing that, is that we would use a network of logo's which would represent us.

Everyone would have at least one logo he/she can link to, but preferably more. For instance, we can have a logo representing geography, or maps, or people, or (difficult one) policy, or transport. So it could be either about the field, the method, or the application. We could even act leisure activities like hiking, or sports, or... the possibilities are endless.

Then, everyone would chose however many logo's he/she feels linked to. Based on the number of links, this logo would get a more prominent place on the T-shirt (e.g. bigger picture), and the network in between would give the connections between the specialties - we could even change the pointsize of the line to correspond to the number of people having this link - e.g. between 'geography' and 'graph theory'.

The T-shirt would then represent all the things we together cover and study with complex systems. I think it could be pretty cool!

To succes, it would need some help from all/most of you, in coming up with the logo's but most importantly linking yourself to the chosen set of logo's (that would be approx 2 min, but still).

So, think about it, and if you have any other ideas, post them below!

CSSS-ers,

Recently, we had a great conversation that illustrated how theory means very different things across disciplines. We want to capture these different meanings of theory in an artistic t-shirt design.

We need your help! We have created a very brief Survey Monkey survey. Please take a just a minute to describe what theory means to you, limiting your description to a tweet-length 140 characters.
Thanks so much for your help!
Zoe, Cali, Michael, and Lydia
== Another (probably obvious) idea ==

I thought it would be neat to take the social network some of us are working on of the group and make it into a pretty graphic, perhaps allowing each person to pick an icon or color to represent themselves. This could go on the T-Shirt, perhaps around or within another design or border.

I thought it would be neat to take the social network some of us are working on of the group and make it into a pretty graphic, perhaps allowing each person to pick an icon or color to represent themselves. This could go on the T-Shirt, perhaps around or within another design or border.

== A first idea ==

Hey Guys! Some of your research interests have been entered. Hopefully this can give us a better idea of what we are studying, and how we can collaborate for the final challenge. They are organized in a [https://spreadsheets.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ak7533_HL5TadHdhRUFyWGVLRHlmN2liSEVtR2FDUEE&hl=en_US google doc].
Hey Again! Here are two versions of the GML. The first is non-editable, it works. The second can be messed around with like a normal sharable google doc. Please remember to cut and paste ALL of the text (No bracket left behind!) into a text editor of your choice (like notepad) and save it as a .gml. There is a code called "value", this is so you can manipulate the PeopleNodes and the SubjectNodes as separate variables. If you have trouble, let me know. Again, apologies for misspellings and mis-placing-you-in-the-mega-universe-of-stuff-to-study.
==Chaotic DJs==

I'd like to play around with the idea of using chaotic attractors to create music, as introduced by Liz Bradley. If anyone else is interested, please say so below! Ideally, I'd love to create a new piece of music (perhaps even recording a few of the budding musicians at the summer school if possible!), pull the individual parts of the composition apart and then use chaotic attractors to put them back together in new (and constantly evolving) ways. I have music production software on my laptop that we can use as a backbone, but we'd need to work out how to program something so that the differential equations controlled it (or otherwise figure out how to use the DEs to make a composition that we then record within the software - perhaps an easier option!) I'd like to hear other people's ideas about what elements of the piece the chaotic attractors could be used to manipulate - Liz's example only used them to re-order pitch, but I'm sure there are other things that we could do too. Hopefully this could be a project that we could play with in our spare time - I'm also looking to join in with a more academic project too, but I think this could potentially be a very enjoyable side-project. -Martin Gould

Interested:
Anna Deluca
Nini Zhang (I'm particularly interested variations as defined computationally v musically)
Stefani Crabtree (What a great idea! I'm a musician: www.stefanicrabtree.com)
Lydia Smith (I hope it's not too late to jump on board!)
Sean Roberts

How about having a quick meeting to discuss ideas on Thursday lunch time? Dining hall at noon? The original paper that Liz talked about is here: [http://www.aip.org/journals/chaos/95_1.pdf] perhaps we could discuss which of the original ideas we'd like to use and also brainstorm some new ones that we'd like to try out. -Martin

[[A Page for Mysterious Things]]
In other words, it's the talk page for members of this group. It's not exciting, don't look at it.

==The CSSS11-network challenge==

Today the Networks Module has started. One of the well-known examples of a network, is a social network.
Did you realize you have been working hard on an (almost) completely new social network in the past few days?

How do these networks come in to place? How do we make friends? Will we be a fully connected network? How many hubs do we have - and can we explain how these hubs come in to place?

This is an excellent opportunity to find some answers to these questions!

The idea is to base the results on the contacts people make. Simply put: who did you have a conversation with? By noting this regularly, we can see the connectedness and sorts of the network evolve over time.

The plan is to collect data on
1) The evolvement of the network over time, in terms of nr of contacts (conversations lasting over 10 minutes) per approx. 2 days
2) The 'final' network, as in the people you feel connected to (would like to contact for science or social activities)
All results will be processed anonymously and will appear (at the end of the summerschool) on the wiki.

We need your help off course, to answer these questions.
The first survey can be found at: www.thesistools.com/web/?id=20584
If you are interested in this project, I will organize some discussion meeting (probably in the next week). For now: add your name to the list below, and send in the survey! (while encouraging as much of your connections as you can to do so, too ;) )

If you have any questions, send a message to ehuk at rsm dot nl.

Thank you so much for your help!
Hey Guys! Some of your research interests have been entered. Hopefully this can give us a better idea of what we are studying, and how we can collaborate for the final challenge. They are organized in a google doc for sorting, searching etc, and all should have editing privileges. Sorry for typos!
==Econophysics/Economics Working Group==

Akira, Veronica and I have been discussing some econophysics-type problems recently, and we are going to set up a small working group to meet and discuss our work and problems that we've been thinking about. We will be talking about using ideas from complex systems (such as agent-based modelling, statistical mechanics, etc.) to re-visit traditional problems from economics. We haven't set a date for our first meeting yet, but it's likely to be early next week. Please add your name to the list below if you'd like to come along, either to talk or just to listen!
