- Mmm, the smell of eucalyptus at the Fragrant Villa

- Waking up early to climb up the mountain at 6:30AM (only to get passed by old shirtless men in dress pants). Thank you jet lag.

- Green pea ice cream?

- Jolie's Chinese cocktail: Lychee beer and baiju

- "S***! F***! I forgot my shoes!" - Timo on the bus, half way to the Great Wall

- "Be careful of landslide" - sign in the bathroom

- Eating infinite amounts of food, three times a day

- Buying 14 waters during lunch at the Forbidden City. To, umm, prevent dehydration ;-)

- Swimming by the Great Wall in forbidden waters

- Repeat 100 "So... how's your project going?"

- Alex showing us how it's done at the pool hall

- Oh, that tastes different than it looks.

- Mmm, bitter melon. Take that gut bacteria!

- Sally & Ruby having to get up and dance during the middle of dinner at a not-so-Thai restaurant

- Grace's graceful performances during karaoke

- Random dude's not so graceful karaoke performances

- Looking through 100 dictionaries to find one English-Chinese dictionary with pin yin.

Hi my name is Sally, my email is sallymaki(at)berkeley(dot)edu; feel free to touch base. I'm very excited about this school and meeting such a cool crowd :-).

I am currently a second year master's student in an interdisciplinary program at UC Berkeley called the Energy and Resources Group (http://erg.berkeley.edu). My undergrad degree is in Chemical Engineering from the University of Dayton, Ohio, which is also where I spent most of my time growing up. I'm currently working on a carbon footprint calculator (see http://coolclimate.berkeley.edu) for the Berkeley Institute of the Environment. I am also working on a project called Berkeley FIRST, about solar financing, with the Renewable and Appropriate Energy Lab (http://rael.berkeley.edu/berkeleysolar). In the past I've worked on indoor air pollution in developing countries, and economic modeling of precision farming. I like to hang out with my neighbors, watch foreign films, "play" on my computer, and explore new places and activities.

I am interested in:

A little about me. I am currently a second year master's student in the Energy and Resources Group (http://erg.berkeley.edu), an interdisciplinary program at UC Berkeley. By the time I meet any of you though, I will hopefully be graduated. I grew up in Dayton, OH where I also got a degree in Chemical Engineering. I am 23, but by the time I meet you I'll have revolved once more around the sun. In my free time I am usually hanging out with my neighbors, but I also like to watch a lot of movies, work on web design, or "explore". As far as outdoor activities, I prefer things that don't involve flying objects (or running) - rock climbing, hiking, biking, stuff with water.

- Design

and the relationships between them, of course. In particular, I am interested in how information technology can be utilized to improve resource management of all kinds. Resources include people too! Which ties into why I am so interested in education and social systems. Resource flows are often part of complex systems which creates a lot complications with management. Information technology can address some of the issues there.
