Idea markets are contexts where ideas compete for attention and people to embrace them. They are near ubiquitous in the form of religions, political parties, securities markets and the blogosphere to name a few. Most idea markets are also communities where members alternate between being idea consumers and producers. They are thus centers for collaborative knowledge creation. Recent research extols the value of diverse perspectives among the members of such groups, however these groups tend to form based on commonality of idea preference, a basis that is thought to limit diversity. This study investigates whether ideal levels of cognitive diversity can emerge in such groups. It finds that general popularity among idea markets draws together people with diverse perspectives, causing ideal levels of cognitive diversity to emerge.

==Anyone for Bridge?==
* I realise this may be betraying my inner geek a little too much, but I was just wondering if anyone at the school was interested in getting together for a bit of just-for-fun bridge? If enough people are interested, then maybe we could organise a regular evening while we're here. It's a great game and should appeal to all complexity students! (9 out of 10 Grandmothers can't be wrong......!) Any takers, just get in touch with me! [[http://www.santafe.edu/events/workshops/index.php/Kernuack Hannah]]
You are a geek. I like playing 500. I would be up for learning Bridge if people are patient. [Ryan]

Have to admit that I played some bridge a loooong time ago... forgotten most about it by now though. But I'm willing to give it a shot (hope for your own sake that you're better in bridge than in pool Hannah ;D) [Johan]

its time to face facts: we all are geeks (you too have been tainted with this brush ryan!) and should be wallowing in it. can this session be titled "everything you ever wanted to know about bridge but were too afraid to ask?" if so, I am in [dan]

I'm sure I can manage to articulate the basics to a willing audience ;o) Hannah

- should we try for a further "refinement" on sunday evening? cheese and port?? [dan]

I know I missed the boat on the first night but I would like to learn this rule-filled game properly. I've played a couple of times many years ago so perhaps some cheese and port will jog my memory [[http://www.santafe.edu/events/workshops/index.php/Alex_Healing Alex]]
I don't think I can go that weekend, but I have a tent that'll fit two people comfortably that I'm happy to lend to anyone who wants to go. [[http://www.santafe.edu/events/workshops/index.php/James_Battin James]]
I've been getting some sniffs of interest in the game! I can probably arrange a bat here and we can play tennis ball cricket (I can also offer a tutorial on cricket ;) - for proper leather ball cricket, folks are welcome to practice with the UNM cricket club at Albuquerque coming saturday around noon! (dont worry, it's fun cricket and not professional quality either!), the club (and I) then travel to Colorado for a couple of matches 16/17 June; so if some are interested in a Colorado trip, let me know. == El Farol and Other Places to Eat ==
Since the [http://www.elfarolsf.com El Farol Restaurant and Bar] has become immortalized in the complexity literature ([http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/El_Farol_Bar_problem The El Farol Bar Problem]), we should check it out. BTW, some locals said the El Farol is a tapas bar and not a full restaurant. See below for more places.

Some locals told me about a few more great places to eat in town: [http://local.yahoo.com/details?id=20215762 Horseman's Haven] and [http://bobcatbite.com/ Bobcat Bite]. I've also tried The [http://local.yahoo.com/details;_ylt=AiKEjhWdFcvv3xBCmycTIouHNcIF?id=20206492&stx=santa+fe+baking Santa Fe Baking Co] and it was great. ==Grand Canyon?==
Flagstaff, AZ is about 5 hours away, which is a good place to spend the night with GC a relatively short drive away.
If other people are interested I could drive the long way home to Tucson passing by Flagstaff and spend a couple of days.<br>
I was there a couple of years ago, but I didn’t have my camera with me then. I would like to fix that stupid mistake.<br>
In any case, email me if interested. [http://www.santafe.edu/events/workshops/index.php/Jose_Delgado jd]
<br>
<br>
btw, for those who asked, I checked and for the Grand Canyon the only thing that requires a permit in advance is overnight camping or overnight hiking.
==Hike to Nambé Lake, Saturday, June 9th==
Folks: we will hike to Nambé Lake, which is a less-strenuous hike in the same area as Santa Fe Baldy. The guide book says the lake is a “special treat”, and there are apparently lots of wildflowers. It is a 5-hour trip (including lunch stop), 7 miles return. The plan is to meet at 9.30am in the usual spot (same place from where the shuttle buses take us to SFI).

The first ten confirmed people are: me (Ryan), Simon, Mike, Elise, Monika, John, Dan, James, Hannah, Fred…

Please add yourself to this list if you want to come (apologies if you gave me a verbal commitment and I forgot).
John has kindly offered to drive and we will also be renting one car. If you want to come and aren't on the list above, please figure out your own transport arrangements (I think Michigan Will might be driving too).
===morning bird/wildlife walk=== Are you getting too much sleep? Do your days feel empty? Join us for a morning bird/wildlife walk. The general plan is to be on the trail by 6:00 am and return before the end of breakfast. If we don't have transportation, we'll just head up the trail near campus. Fred and I both have binoculars that can be shared, but if anyone else has a pair they can lend to the endeavor, that'd be great. I'll post more details as the week progresses and we get a better idea of who's coming. Drop me a line or leave your name below if you're interested. ==Anyone for Bridge?==

Fred and I both have binoculars that can be shared, but if anyone else has a pair they can lend to the endeavor, that'd be great. sort of free market kinds of dynamics. My idea is to pursue a "natural" ramification of this - that is to look for a power law in the way in which these
Along similar lines, I wonder if it would be possible to construct a phylogenetic tree that shows the diversity/disparity growth in religious ideas - again, charting the development of sects, splinter groups, etc.
This has basically been my approach to analyzing the evolution of the blogosphere (as an idea market) even though it does not specifically focus on religion. My motivation was Dawkins work, especially what he had to say about the means by which memes and memesets are propagated: partly by people opting-in and partly by various means of persuasion. I'm interested in seeing whether a power law results (as discussed above and is the current state of the blogosphere) or if the long-term distribution is a kind of reversed power law. Today we see a few religions with a lot of members and many sects with a few members, same story in the blogosphere. But I wonder whether there isn't a slow migration to the sects where eventually, the big religions will be diminished in size and sects will hold the majority (a long fat tail). I hypothesize this migration is a process of cultural tribalization: people congregating on the basis of a narrow scope of shared ideas rather than tolerance for a diversity of ideas.

Please bring: lunch (we can stop at a store in the morning); water (2 litres); a raincoat; a warm jumper; decent footwear; sun protection.

== Sunday, June 10: Join me for Church, 11am ==
I'm planning to go to visit a nearbye [http://www.calvarybaptistsantafe.com Baptist church], all are welcome to come. I will likely ride there. I can arrange another bike, or if we are many, perhaps a car. Please let me know below, or by email if you'd prefer. If you wanted to join me for Bible study on a one-off or weekly basis (this would be sitting round to read a passage of the Bible and discuss it) then let me know (again, by email if you'd prefer). All persuassions and questions welcome! [[Simon_Angus]] (s.angus AT unsw.edu.au)
(dont worry, it's fun cricket and not professional quality either!), the club (and I) then travel to Colorado for a couple of matches 16/17 June; so if some are interested in a Colorado trip, let me know. == El Farol and Other Places to Eat ==

BTW, some locals said the El Farol is a tapas bar and not a full restaurant. See below for more places.

How about an outing some evening next week? Thursday or Friday night (14th or 15th)? I'm staying about a block from El Farol, on Acequia Madre... Should we run the NetLogo simulation first? :) [http://www.santafe.edu/events/workshops/index.php/Mollie_Poynton Mollie].

Please bring: lunch (we can stop at a store in the morning); water (2 litres); a raincoat; a warm jumper; decent footwear; sun protection.

Collective Intelligence is a buzz-word, and it seems that many people are interested in this area. I think that collective intelligence is closely linked with collective rationality. Excellent theoretical foundations for the question of collective rationality are provided by SOCIAL CHOICE THEORY.

Roughly speaking, social choice theory aims to explore the possibility of aggregating rational individual preferences (or judgements) to collectively rational preferences (or judgements). The arguments consist of rigorous mathematical/logical proofs. Social choice theory shows that aggregation is often impossible, given some (seemingly) weak requirements for the aggregation function. This gives rise to deep questions about the possibility of democracy, the decision procedures in committees/juries, or the issue of group agency.

I could give a short and non-formal introduction and point you to more advanced papers and proofs. I should say that I'm not doing research in social choice myself, but my supervisor does and I think I could convey at least the basics.

= Concept =
Currently, when we do modeling in economics and other social sciences, we are often creating ''agents'' purely as strategies -- we have a population of strategies, without regard to the characteristics of the ''carrier''. This is an old debate in biology between [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phenotype Phenotype] (observable, measurable traits) and [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genotype Genotype] (normally strategy information such as motivation or game-play (in economics)). Should we worry about the current confounding of the two? .. Perhaps not, but if firms have a motivation/strategy for their behaviour, and (say) lose a production line due to a power-failure, or storm, then essentially their observable characteristics have changed, but their motivations/strategy remains the same (they may have a strategy for dealing with this event, but the point remains).

= Criticism of current modeling dogma =
In economic / game-theoretic computational models, agents imitate each other's strategies (i.e. genotypes). But this is a mistake (or a simplifying assumption?) because strategies are not publicly accessible nor directly observable. What is publicly observable is behavior (i.e. phenotypes). In other words, in the real world we often copy each other's behavior, but not the contents of each other's heads (beliefs and desires). Agents in a real economic market can't imitate what's internal to the agent. But copying the behavior of a successful agent might not always lead to success. For example, Canon might invest in making cheap color printers not because Canon expects to make money off printers, but because it hopes to make money from selling ink cartridges. (And vice versa, a successful imitator might be successful in the short run not because she is using a good strategy, but because she merely got lucky.) Similarly, by analogy, a scientist only has access to observable phonemona (e.g. cloud chamber) when building a model of the physical world (i.e. a physical theory), not its internal structure with its theoretical entities (e.g. an electron). In short, imitation and reconstruction happen at the level of what's publicly and externally observable (be it behavior in an economic market or evidence in science), not at the level of the actual internal structure (be it beliefs and desires of successful agents in an economic market or theoretical entities in science), whereas computational economic models (e.g. agent-based models that use evolutionary game theory) currently model interactions as if imitation and learning proceeds at the internal, publicly inaccessible level of copying the strategy of other agents who are successful.

= Modeling Thoughts =
So we need to build a richer description of agents that are embodied in some way. Some have done this in the biological evolutionary literature by using external 'tagging' to indicate type characteristics, but these often have nothing to do with genotype, they are normally just modeling tools. (One could argue this for the firm model above -- that the firm loses a part of its 'body' is not coded for by strategy.) In economics, we need to ask what is a phenotype for a firm? What is it above and beyond its strategic decisions? Or for an individual, what determines its fitness/success, independent of its strategic play?

This ties into ideas of ''levels of selection'' -- what we are really arguing is that strategies do not play strategies, but individuals who have a strategy play against other individuals with their own strategy. The battle is at the observable/phenotypic scale, not the strategic... or is it?

Are we just talking about path-dependence in an agent's fitness/relative-success? .. for instance, the classical definition of phenotypic variation is given in the wikipedia link above:

'''genotype + environment + random-variation → phenotype'''

or for our purposes we would have:

'''strategy + environment + random-variation → phenotype'''

recall, these are leading to ''how the agent now behaves'', not how it fairs in the world (which can also be affected by 'environment' and 'random-variation' at the discretion of the modeller...)

Thinking about this some more, finite state automata might be a good example of an agent model for such a difference. Since the ''behaviour'' of an agent might be 'All-D' towards one agent, but towards another (because of the complex state arrangement of the FSA) it might play 'CDDDCCCDDD...etc.' and give a rich behavioural basis, and this, from the single ''genotype'' (strategy encodded by the FSA). But is this enough?

Another possible model: instead of merely having genotype imitators, we could have three types of agents: (1) traditional genotype imitators, (2) phenotype imitators that copy behavior, (3) some combination of the two. Expected result?

It would also be interesting to compare a model where survival from generation-to-generation follows the "random death of the unfit" paradigm rather than the usual strict propagation of the fittest mechanism.

= Other Notes and Thoughts =
One of the most accepted views of "the firm" is Barney's (1991) [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resource-based_view Resource Based View of the Firm (RBV)] which postulates that firms can only achieve and sustain competitive advantage if they have superior resources (tangible and intangible) and a means of keeping other firms from copying them. This idea has been recently extended by the "dynamic capability perspective" that says the most successful firms are the ones that can most quickly adapt to their changing environment by adapting existing resources and acquiring new ones (this adaptability itself being a resource). This seems to fit very well into what is proposed above, strategies are secret and the ability to evolve better strategies (and manifest them in behaviors) is part of the genotype. We could add to the array of competing models mentioned above, one that incorporates a space featuring scarce resources, varying levels of resources or the need to have behaviors that successfully compete for resources.

<br>
One area where this might be studied is in the blogosphere, the collection of all blogs. A blog is a website where an author posts content and readers write comments or link to the post in their own blogs. The author's act of posting is an invitation for distributed computing in the form of people thinking about the post. Some interested readers will self-select to share the results of their thinking by writing comments. How do we know if the diversity of expressed thought in these comments reflects the thinking of the larger world? Can we measure the diversity of expressed thought and statistically infer its diversity?<br>
I think ABM can be used to simulate the blog as a cognitive space and the actions of agents (author and commenters) in it. Are the author's post and reader comments cognitive "attractors" that affect the positioning of future comments in the space?<br>
<br>
How do cell phones affect economic growth in countries where communications infrastructure is poor?

A [[Media:CellPhonesAndFishing.pdf|recent paper]] covered in the Economist suggests that cell phones have reduced waste in fisheries, by giving boats price information before they return to shore. They can choose profitable markets for their catch. The reduction in waste increases the total value of the catch by 5% or more. Better arbitrage and lower information costs result in a sustained productivity gain.

There is lots more to the story here than simple arbitrage opportunities. Communications technology lowers the cost of information for all parties on the network. This should result in lower barriers to entry, lower transaction costs, more innovation, higher productivity, and access to many more customers.

==Cell phones in developing economies==
How do cell phones affect economic growth in countries where communications infrastructure is poor?

A recent paper covered in the Economist suggests that cell phones have reduced waste in fisheries, by giving boats price information before they return to shore.

===Financial transactions via text message===
Recently cell phone companies have permitted credits (essentially a form of cash) to be transferred among users via text message. This system of payments is a rudimentary financial service for households, potentially in competition with microfinance and the formal financial sector.

= Modeling Thoughts =
So we need to build a richer description of agents that are embodied in some way. Some have done this in the biological evolutionary literature by using external 'tagging' to indicate type characteristics, but these often have nothing to do with genotype, they are normally just modelling tools.

Could this be factored into the model above? Or is it already there?
I'm a PhD candidate in the [http://mays.tamu.edu/depts/mktg/ Department of Marketing] at [http://www.tamu.edu Texas A&M]. I also have a BS in Computer Engineering from [http://www.usf.edu USF]. My research has drawn me into the world of social networks and emergent behavior, especially as it is revealed in online communities and the blogosphere. I'm just getting into a project computationally modeling the way people share their thoughts in blogs.

Even though my face is tanned a nice florescent pale blue from hours in front of a LCD monitor, I do enjoy running, hiking and many other things that occur under more natural forms of light.

I'm looking forward to meeting all of you.
