==Road Trip to Boulder, Colorado==

From Gareth: Hi all, I'm planning on making a trip up to Boulder, CO for the weekend. It's about a 6 1/2 hr drive from Santa Fe and I'll be renting a car. My main reason for the trip is to see a friend of mine so you might have to sort your own accommodation (camping/youth hostel/hotel). We're planning on a bit of hiking nearby. The plan is to leave straight from class on Friday evening and arrive back in Santa Fe on Sunday eve. If you're interested in splitting petrol and rental fee and joining me for some Springsteen singalongs then sign up:
==An easier way to get a bifurcation plot==

Hey guys
I have been working in the past in obtaining bifurcation plots for different physical systems. There's a better way to get these pictures instead of getting the evolution at every parameter value of interest. This is called ''numerical continuation'' and basically involves tracking a curve. I plan to give a informal talk on how to do this and maybe even a demo on applying this technique on 14th June at 6.30 pm. Do mail me if you are interested at '''iitm.priya@gmail.com''' or sign up below.

==Using Tisean on R on OS X==
first install TISEAN, like you've done already. Make sure R is up to date (v 2.15).
you can try to install RTisean from CRAN
install.packages("RTisean"); library(RTisean); henon()
But me and Dave both got an error about some bad file name, something about con and something about a long path involving -Tmp-
Solution:
remove.packages("RTisean")
restart R
download this: http://cl.ly/0I0b2P2L311y1q0q0y0n
install it, it changes line 74 of nativeTISEAN.R which has some problems with file handling
If you are golden, then:
> henon()
V1        V2
Every year we have a T-shirt design contest, where CSSS Students create designs (relevant to the summer school) and during the end of the second week we vote on the one we will print and distribute to the cohort. Please post your T-shirt design below. The design will be printed on a single colored T-shirt (keep in mind which color T-shirt you would like to print on while planning your design). The print that will go on the T-shirt is limited to a two color back and a one color front.
Urania blowing seeds of complexity

This is a draft I prepared a late evening some time before the CSSS. I didn't know at that time that the dorms have muse names and that I'll end up in the Urania...

Urania was the muse of Astronomy and also the Muse of Mathematics. she was often depicted holding a globe in her hands. In this case the cubist face and hands of Urania are borrowed from Picasso and she holds a SFI globe/dandelion flower head, on which she blows in order to disperse the seeds of complexity.

In my view this would need some serious polishing and volunteers to do so are welcome! Feedbacks also!

Crystals are a prime manifestation of complexity. The design (front and back) represents crystals grown in cell culture dishes as seen under the microscope. The picture on the right has been mapped on a canvas with polar coordinates to show more symmetrical structure and avoid having a beginning and an end. (One from Georg Weber)

Last week (May 24), Guryul Ravine, near Srinagar, Kashmir

Hi everyone, I'm Nick, a physicist turned paleontologist. I'm currently a postdoc fellow at the Paleontological Institute and Museum of the Univ. of Zurich, Switzerland ([http://www.pim.uzh.ch PIMUZ]).

My main interest is in the coupled histories of Earth and life on various spatial and time scales. My recent research experience includes the integrative use of paleontological, geochemical and sedimentological data in order to study the mechanisms that led to the greatest mass extinction of the Phanerozoic at the Permo-Triassic boundary (about 250 Ma).

During my PhD in paleontology I became an expert on conodonts, which were eel-shaped, marine animals. Their tooth-like phosphatic elements represent the earliest expression of a mineralized skeleton among vertebrates. These conodont elements are important index fossils from the Cambrian to the end of the Triassic. As such, not only they provide an interesting tool for evolutionary studies, but they also enable to construct timescales against which geological and biological events can be calibrated. Moreover, their chemical composition has remained relatively stable and hence they record past changes in the temperature and composition of oceans.

Some of my last results include a 3d reconstruction of their oro-pharyngeal apparatus at work ([http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wJunXtPFK-0 movie]). In the near future I plan to use functional analysis of these ‘teeth’ to infer the potential location of different conodont taxa within past food webs and to study changes of these food webs’ topology in relation with evolutionary events (innovations, radiations, crisis). Because the morphology of these ‘teeth’ obviously do not reflect only functional purposes but also important developmental aspects (which are potentially common to extant vertebrates), another project that I’m currently preparing deals with the morphogenesis of these tooth-like elements.

During the last years I have devoted most of my efforts to the production and analysis of empirical data. In the near future I plan to focus on the development of data-driven theoretical models. In most of these projects, I have to deal with complex systems. Though my training as a physicist included some of the required tools, I feel that I might need an update on some of the topics addressed during the CSSS. My main motivation for attending (and actively participating in ;) ) the CSSS is to have the chance to meet the experts on these topics and hence get a current overview over potentials and limitations of complex systems research. It would also give me the opportunity to assess the strengths and weaknesses of my educational cursus, and to reflect on my current research by stepping back and looking at new, wider horizons. I also expect that the stimulating discussions with you guys will lead to new ideas for my research and possibly to new collaborations.
