Wait a minute electric car. We’re making real progress here. - Hitesh Soneji

What happens when the electric vehicle hits the ground running? Will we drop our livable communities strategies and ride our lithium-ion horses into the sprawling sunset?

Growing concern over climate change has provided a crucial boost to the sustainable and livable communities movement. Around the nation, more people are walking, cycling, and taking public transit than ever before (ref). Local governments are encouraging this mobility shift by encouraging transit oriented development, live-work neighborhoods, and expanding the reach of their transit networks. Some municipalities have even had the foresight to envision reduced automobile dependency (ref).

Enthusiasm for the electric vehicle could put a damper on real progress. It would result in a tremendous wasted opportunity to revive the vibrancy and character of Main Street. The land of chains and sprawl has stretched our existence in time and space, weakening localized social relations. Envision instead the rejuvenation and creation of thousands of new Main Streets across the nation. These communities promise a richer living experience, increased social well-being, and improved health. Intelligently designed livable cities reduce pressure on near-by open space, parks, and farm land, providing recreational opportunities and natural habitat buffers so that flora and fauna can flourish. By the virtues embedded in their very structure, livable cities will politely ask us to live within more sustainable means while at the same-time increasing our well-being and happiness (ref?). Even the mythical car that runs on magic dust simply can't provide all that.

While I applaud efforts to electrify our automobile fleet, such a shift will put severe near-term strains on our nation’s electricity grid while only partially reducing green house gas emissions. Irrelevant of fuel choice, continued automobile dependency would perpetuate sprawl and deterioration of the quality of life within our cities. Reducing the need to drive is essential to improving livability, no matter the advances that technology might bring to the automobile. Let's take the opportunity that climate change has offered us to reinvigorate the American city so that it serves all our people, not the very traffic that chokes it.

Jackman's Idea: Every year big box stores are built on acres of formerly fertile farm land to both the detriment and benefit of small communities. Every year many of those box stores fail or relocate, primarily for expansion. With the failure or departure of these store, we are left with rural "big box-store blight" - huge, unusable buildings and acres of paved, impermeable surfaces that mar the landscape. Upon abandoning retail locations, I think that box store retailers such as Walmart, Whole Foods, Kmart, Krogers, and many others have an obligation to restore the landscape to its original condition or renovate the buildings and parking lots to accommodate other (non-box store) uses. In an op-ed I would like to motivate the necessity for this policy as well as provide suggestions as to how this might be achieved. I expect that these methods will provide disincentives for some box-stores to locate in areas with this requirement, but this is not the objective. Rather, the objectives are to 1) motivate box-stores to locate carefully, 2) discourage them from moving for the purposes of expansion, and 3) maintain the environmental, social, and community value of the landscape.
Perhaps not exactly to the point, but an interesting Ted video about [http://www.ted.com/talks/lang/eng/ellen_dunham_jones_retrofitting_suburbia.html reclaiming and retrofitting suburbia].
Strumsky's Idea: Education and Irrationality: The solution offered for many major social problems is that we can educate our way out of them. This strikes me about as viable as being able to invent our way out of problems. There are too many examples of people having a clear, well informed understanding of a problem and they do not dispute the facts or data, yet choosing the irrational option (or to use game theory, selecting non-dominant strategies). The examples are everywhere; obesity is well understood, the facts and consequences for people’s health is not in dispute, yet obesity and its health consequences are on the rise - not just in the US, but globally. We can go on and on, alcoholism, drinking and driving, smoking, positions against healthcare reform by the individuals who are ill and uninsured. If we can not educate our way out of problems what do we do? We need another option.

I come to the sustainability world from a background that started in robotics and making computer chips. I even dabbled in designing and developing an automated bicycle sharing scheme with smart racks. More recently, I completed an MS degree in Sustainability Science at Lund University in Sweden, where we worked across many disciplines and countries to investigate the sustainability dilemma in detail. There we posed many questions engaging current paradigms against various social theories, natural physical constraints, and societal responses. In my research there, we utilized agent based models and system dynamics models, among others.

My research interest is book-ended by two pillars that both work to bring us closer to a condition that might resemble sustainable. The first pillar is that of education, or outreach if you will. Sustainability is no trivial problem, and my interest here deals with how best to distill an inherently complex problem into simpler messages that promote social and cultural values consistent with sustainability. I do not believe that sustainability can be achieved if left only for the activists, advocates, and scientists to pursue. Sustainability is a problem of and by the masses. Their engagement is key, and I wish to test and explore media-based and educational pathways to increase the penetration of sustainability as a lay concern.

The second pillar of my research interest is far more technical. It involves agents of the computational sort, modeled after the carbon-based sort. Here I wish to better understand human behavior in complex systems involving constrained and/or hazardous resources. The applications I am most interested in include distributed energy systems, multi-stakeholder water management, and rare/hazardous material flows in information technology equipment.

My research interests go beyond only understanding agent behavior. They extend to the development of the tools and frameworks to enable active participation by a broader group of stakeholders in the sustainability decision-making process. System dynamics and agent-based model improvement hold the promise of allowing policy makers to actively see how stakeholders and ecosystems might respond to policy proposals. My ultimate interest is in formulating a level of understanding of systems and agent behavior that is complete enough to be conducive to predictive computational analysis that enables experimentation with various social and policy tools to achieve greater sustainability.

Currently, I am a faculty at City College of San Francisco, where I am working to integrate sustainability both at the institutional level and in new courses addressing sustainability. I have also been assisting the Green Belt Alliance, a San Francisco non-profit dedicated to preserving open space and promoting smart growth for the bay area. I am also active in San Francisco's sustainable transportation movement, trying to improve SF's transit system and promote bicycling as a safe and legitimate means of transportation. In my spare time, I enjoy hiking, camping, cycling, reading, and of course, my 17 month old.
