there are many others with very inspiring and ready to present research findings, so the idea would be to have the last small session this '''Tuesday''' let's say 4.15 - 5.45 ...15 min each (so cut it down to the essentials! ...max 10 slides, if any!) and leave some room for discussion... so if you're ready and want some constructive feedback, just put here the title of your potential presentation, and we'll see if we get a critical mass that's interested:

Im thinking of taking a trip to the carlsbad caverns, white sands and the VLA this weekend... we can also do some stargazing and perhaps stop at Roswell if people are interested since its on the way....

Its going to be an overnight trip... 2 days... just want to see if people might be interested... i realize its far... but the caverns and white sands come highly recommended for this part of the country...

I am open to doing this on the weekend after the program as well...

==Stargazing==

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

UPDATE 2: We are planning to leave from SFI at 9pm (we'll be there for the Couzin's lecture). Sign up for a ride. We will drive about 30 min. out of town, spend two hours in the field, and return by midnight. You needn't bring anything, but if your smartphone has one of those star-finder apps, that could be cool.

Would anybody would be interested in hiking the Atalaya Mountain Trail (or anywhere else) before dawn to watch the sunrise from the top?

When?

I am kind of tempted to do it on a weekday, but I may end up doing it alone. Unless a few people are interested, we could do it, let's say, this Saturday? The sun rises at about 5h45 these days.

==Museum Trip Friday June 24th==
It's $8 for admission to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I want to go after lecture next week; sounds like a cool exhibit about the relationship between photography and contemporary art. Let's meet outside the student center at 4:30pm. The museum is open until 7pm. We can potentially grab dinner and drinks downtown afterwards.
I'll drive down in my car from St. Johns; I've got space for 4 more.

Note: let's join the Canyon Drive walk tomorrow instead. Free art > museums. :) -Nora

Ok, look. I (Ed) like frisbee. By virtue of being into science, you people must at some level also like frisbee. So, let's play frisbee. There are lots of ways to do this:

2) Throwing with our arms tucked in like T-Rex's
3) Imbibing beverages and throwing
4) Spinning the disc on our fingers (ooo fancy) and then throwing it

The St. John's cafeteria is great, but Santa Fe is also the home of many unique, world-class restaurants. I would like to go out for a nice dinner some night and would love company. Taos is a small town about 60 miles North of Santa Fe. It's known for the Taos Indian Pueblo, an artist colony, skiing, and the Taos Earthships. Depending on who's interested, we could stop by some wineries on the way up/down. The drive up alone is worth it.

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

===Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness===
I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. UPDATE 2: We are planning to leave from SFI at 9pm (we'll be there for the Couzin's lecture). Sign up for a ride. We will drive about 30 min. out of town, spend two hours in the field, and return by midnight. National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

==Stargazing==

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

It's $8 for admission to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I want to go after lecture next week; sounds like a cool exhibit about the relationship between photography and contemporary art. ===Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness===
I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

==NRAO Very Large Array==

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

===Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness===
I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

Taos is a small town about 60 miles North of Santa Fe. It's known for the Taos Indian Pueblo, an artist colony, skiing, and the Taos Earthships. Depending on who's interested, we could stop by some wineries on the way up/down. The drive up alone is worth it.

==NRAO Very Large Array==

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

==Stargazing==

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

It's $8 for admission to the Georgia O'Keefe Museum. I want to go after lecture next week; sounds like a cool exhibit about the relationship between photography and contemporary art. Let's meet outside the student center at 4:30pm. The museum is open until 7pm. We can potentially grab dinner and drinks downtown afterwards.

Taos is a small town about 60 miles North of Santa Fe. It's known for the Taos Indian Pueblo, an artist colony, skiing, and the Taos Earthships. Depending on who's interested, we could stop by some wineries on the way up/down. The drive up alone is worth it.

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). Any suggestions? - Nini

If you do go to the VLA, I'd recommend combining it with a visit to Kelly Mine, an old ghost town near Magdalena which is pretty neat to poke around. There is also a great microbrewery in Socorro (called Socorro Springs). Also, the town of Magdalena is in the process of trying to make itself a mini-artists' haven, so it could be fun to poke around the galleries there. Any more questions about the region and I'll see what I can do; my mom is from Socorro, and I can ask her for further suggestions. -Nora

==Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness==
I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

==Stargazing==

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

==Backpacking in the Pecos Wilderness==
I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

I'd like to spend an evening star-gazing - maybe try to get far enough out of town to avoid major light pollution. The next new moon is July 1st, so we might look to do it towards the end of the program.

UPDATE: Given folks' schedules, let's plan for stargazing the evening of Wednesday, June 29th. Those of us working on projects will want to have the evening of the 30th free. I will work on a location and further details with JP. I will also keep an eye on the weather, in case it looks like we might be clouded out. July 1 would be our fall back date. Check back later for more details.

NB: Some people have expressed concern (perhaps hope) that I am organizing this trip as an excuse to make out in a remote location. Sadly, no; I really am nerd enough to want a quasi-scientific look at a clear night's sky. That is my full agenda, and I'm slightly embarrassed I'm not able to say otherwise. Of course, you are welcome to make out on this trip, but please be considerate of those of us who are not planning to do so.

This challenge is to design a network to be robust against the failure of its nodes. You get 1000 nodes and 2000 edges, which you can join together into a network in any fashion you like. You can think of it as a communication network, for instance. The nodes in the largest component of the network can all communicate with one another, while the rest of the network is cut off. Once you have designed your network, a quarter of the nodes fail at random and are removed from the network. The challenge is to design your network so that, on average, as many nodes as possible still remain in the largest component of the network. You don't know in advance which quarter of the nodes will fail, so you need a design that works well in general. If you can find a good solution to this problem, here are two further variations you could think about:

National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). National Radio Astronomy Observatory - Very Large Array

Its a bit of a hike... about a 3 hour drive... but should be totally worth it. Perhaps we could do this and los alamos together on the same day. -Raghav

Heres the description from the website(http://www.vla.nrao.edu/)-

The Very Large Array, one of the world's premier astronomical radio observatories, consists of 27 radio antennas in a Y-shaped configuration on the Plains of San Agustin fifty miles west of Socorro, New Mexico. Each antenna is 25 meters (82 feet) in diameter. The data from the antennas is combined electronically to give the resolution of an antenna 36km (22 miles) across, with the sensitivity of a dish 130 meters (422 feet) in diameter.

I'd love to go and would be willing to rent a car and drive. Unfortunately Los Alamos is in a different direction (NW) than VLA by quite a lot. I suggest looking above for other trips in planning for Los Alamos.

I think this trip depends on when we go (when is Taos Earthships trip?) and whatever else people have planned for. Note that this trip is 3 hours and there's very little else besides VLA in that neighborhood of NM - this trip would be optimal if we can hook on this visit to any other attractions nearby (or in Albuquerque). I've been planning a full-weekend backpacking trip with a local friend of mine. We'd probably camp Friday night at the trailhead (or his parents cabin) to get an early start, set up camp, then do a lighter hike to summit Las Truchas, the second highest peak in NM. We'd return on Sunday. At a minimum, you'd need a backpack and sleeping bag. We might be able to rustle up other gear. Cars shouldn't be an issue.

Given that the brain is a deterministic physical system, is there such a thing as free will?

==Networks==

This challenge is to design a network to be robust against the failure of its nodes. You get 1000 nodes and 2000 edges, which you can join together into a network in any fashion you like. You can think of it as a communication network, for instance. The nodes in the largest component of the network can all communicate with one another, while the rest of the network is cut off. Once you have designed your network, a quarter of the nodes fail at random and are removed from the network. The challenge is to design your network so that, on average, as many nodes as possible still remain in the largest component of the network. You don't know in advance which quarter of the nodes will fail, so you need a design that works well in general. If you can find a good solution to this problem, here are two further variations you could think about:

1. Instead of randomly removing a quarter of the nodes, suppose the quarter with the highest degrees are removed. Now how should you design your network?

2. Now suppose, with equal probability, EITHER a quarter of the nodes fail at random OR the highest-degree quarter fail. Can you design a network that is resilient to both, without knowing in advance which will happen?

Write a script/screen play for an episode of Star Trek (TNG or the original series) in which robustness is the central issue. The episode should be no more than ten minutes long and you should be prepared to perform it on the final day of the CSSS. We leave it up to you to decide whether there will be multiple team entries or just one whole CSSS team entry!

Short-term survival and an exuberant plunge into building our future are generating a new kind of unintended consequence—hidden fragility. And so the challenge is, How much can we understand and predict about these systems and about the social dynamics that lead to their construction?

I am quite interested in this question, and would be willing to join/lead a group directed towards it's answer. I would start by questioning the premise: I think the fragility of socio-technical systems is not a strictly new phenomenon, but perhaps more evident in recent decades. - Miles

==Potential Project==

I'd like to play around with the idea of using chaotic attractors to create music, as introduced by Liz Bradley. If anyone else is interested, please say so below! Ideally, I'd love to create a new piece of music (perhaps even recording a few of the budding musicians at the summer school if possible!), pull the individual parts of the composition apart and then use chaotic attractors to put them back together in new (and constantly evolving) ways. I have music production software on my laptop that we can use as a backbone, but we'd need to work out how to program something so that the differential equations controlled it (or otherwise figure out how to use the DEs to make a composition that we then record within the software - perhaps an easier option!) I'd like to hear other people's ideas about what elements of the piece the chaotic attractors could be used to manipulate - Liz's example only used them to re-order pitch, but I'm sure there are other things that we could do too. Hopefully this could be a project that we could play with in our spare time - I'm also looking to join in with a more academic project too, but I think this could potentially be a very enjoyable side-project. -Martin Gould

==The CSSS11-network challenge==

Today the Networks Module has started. One of the well-known examples of a network, is a social network.
Did you realize you have been working hard on an (almost) completely new social network in the past few days?

How do these networks come in to place? How do we make friends? Will we be a fully connected network? How many hubs do we have - and can we explain how these hubs come in to place?

This is an excellent opportunity to find some answers to these questions!

The idea is to base the results on the contacts people make. Simply put: who did you have a conversation with? By noting this regularly, we can see the connectedness and sorts of the network evolve over time.

The plan is to collect data on 
1) The evolvement of the network over time, in terms of nr of contacts (conversations lasting over 10 minutes) per approx. 2 days 
2) The 'final' network, as in the people you feel connected to (would like to contact for science or social activities) 

All results will be processed anonymously and will appear (at the end of the summerschool) on the wiki.

We need your help off course, to answer these questions.
